Chapter 489: He Probably Won’t Live to See the End of the Year

Wu Chen hadn’t answered Su Ruiwen’s question earlier. Now Su Ruiwen had put it to Li Ruobing, and he believed she would give him an answer. After all, she had already told him so much.

About Wu Chen’s affairs, his connections, his women, and the things about him that defied belief.

In truth, Su Ruiwen wasn’t particularly concerned with any of that. What mattered far more to him was the relationship between his own daughter and Wu Chen.

Li Ruobing met his gaze. After a brief silence, she smiled. “Boss Su, as you know, I’m Wu Chen’s girlfriend. Since you’re asking me that question to my face, I imagine… you already know the answer, don’t you?”

She hadn’t answered Su Ruiwen’s question directly.

But those words amounted to an answer. She had tacitly confirmed it.

Earlier, Su Ruiwen’s expression had changed repeatedly as Li Ruobing told him astonishing things about Wu Chen. Yet now, confronted with the answer to the question that concerned him most, his face showed no change at all.

Just as Li Ruobing had said.

    He already knew the answer.

The moment Li Ruobing said she didn’t mind Wu Chen having other women, Su Ruiwen had been certain. With his intelligence, of course he could work out that Li Ruobing had been covering for Wu Chen and Su Qingying all along.

“How long?” Something flickered in Su Ruiwen’s eyes. His expression settled into calm, and there was no anger in his voice.

No one knew what he was thinking at that moment.

Su Ruiwen was deliberately concealing his emotions.

“Not very long.” Li Ruobing smiled. “Since the day my Mr. Wu took Qingying away from the golf course. I think that was also the day they first met.”

Once again, she was describing something unbelievable.

Wu Chen had taken Su Qingying away that day, faced down Mrs. Su when she came looking for her that afternoon, and by the following day Qingying had seized power at the board meeting.

    Still beyond belief!

But Su Ruiwen’s expression remained unchanged. He’d heard so much that he was becoming numb. He knew that if everything Li Ruobing said was true, this young man Wu Chen genuinely couldn’t be judged by ordinary standards. There was something almost mystical about him!

    Su Ruiwen fell silent.

He turned toward the floor-to-ceiling window, narrowed his eyes slightly, and thought.

As Donghai’s richest man, he naturally found it difficult to accept that the heir to his business empire had become some man’s lover. And as a father, he found it equally difficult to accept that his only daughter was choosing to be the “other woman,” with no recognized status to speak of in the future.

If he had confirmed this yesterday, he would have been furious right now. At least, that was how he believed he would have reacted. He would have regarded Wu Chen with tremendous hostility and suspicion.

He would have stopped at nothing to separate them, even if it meant falling out with Li Ruobing.

Aside from his family, the most important thing in Su Ruiwen’s life was the business empire he had built with his own hands. Su Qingying, who was going to inherit the group, represented both.

He would not allow his daughter to be mistreated.

Nor would he allow some pretty-boy to swindle away the business empire worth tens of billions that he’d built.

To make his daughter give up on Wu Chen, he might even have arranged blind dates for her immediately. There was no shortage of candidates. If he simply removed the requirement that her husband marry into the Su family, sons of the immensely wealthy and politically powerful would be beating down their door.

    That was yesterday.

Now, however, Su Ruiwen had learned something about Wu Chen. His emotions were no longer so simple or straightforward, and his thoughts had become exceedingly complicated.

First, he could be sure that he didn’t need to worry about Wu Chen tricking him out of Jinfu Group, the enterprise he’d spent half his life building. If Li Ruobing was telling the truth, Wu Chen was such an extraordinary figure that the Su family’s assets, though hardly trivial, meant relatively little to him.

To Wu Chen, money might really be nothing more than a number.

If Wu Chen wanted it, setting everything else aside, there were the Qi brothers of Shuangqi Real Estate. To save their lives, they would probably have paid him any amount he asked.

And the interests involved in getting Tang Jingbin to do Wu Chen’s bidding, even at the cost of offending the Xiang family, were beyond imagining.

    Therefore…

Leaving money aside, the issue between Wu Chen and Su Qingying was more one of romance and personal feelings.

Wu Chen’s private life was certainly a mess.

At least, that was how Su Ruiwen saw it. People said men went bad once they got rich, but Su Ruiwen was the perfect example of a wealthy man who hadn’t. He and his wife had loved each other for thirty years.

There was nothing to criticize about the Su family’s upbringing. If anything, its standards were almost excessively strict.

And so Su Ruiwen couldn’t understand his daughter’s choice. How could Su Qingying accept such an arrangement? How could she be willing?

He still found it hard to accept.

But he couldn’t bring himself to lose his temper or break with them. He didn’t even dare try to separate Su Qingying and Wu Chen lightly. It wasn’t that he feared being resented by both sides. It was that he now felt a deep wariness toward Wu Chen.

“You’re not thinking of arranging blind dates for Qingying, are you, Boss Su?” Li Ruobing suddenly asked.

“Hm?” Su Ruiwen turned back to her.

“I think you’d better not.” Li Ruobing spoke quietly, smiling. “Someone could die. I don’t mean you, Boss Su. I mean anyone who dares go on a date with Qingying. Whoever it is, I imagine… he’ll end up dead.”

    Su Ruiwen said nothing.

In fact, he hadn’t even gotten as far as thinking about arranging blind dates. His thoughts had been stuck on Wu Chen’s methods and his daughter’s attitude.

“That man Wu Chen…” Li Ruobing looked at him and continued. “He’s fascinating. He always finds a way to surprise people. But… to tell you the truth, Boss Su, even I’m afraid of him sometimes. Not because he’s harsh with me. He’s never harsh with anyone. On the contrary, he’s always smiling. But…”

“I don’t know whether you’ll understand what I mean. Wu Chen always solves problems in ways you simply can’t comprehend. Sometimes, even after something has happened, you still have no idea… exactly what he did or how he did it. It’s frightening.”

“And the way he does things…”

“Will Ding Ruilong die, then?” Su Ruiwen interrupted suddenly.

The thought had occurred to him, so he asked. Li Ruobing had just said that if he arranged a blind date for Su Qingying, the man involved would die. That made him think of Li Ruobing’s own situation. Ding Ruilong was still relentlessly pursuing her.

“Ding Ruilong…” Li Ruobing repeated his name. Something entered her smile. “He probably won’t live to see the end of this year.”

    Su Ruiwen’s pupils contracted.

He truly had asked the question offhandedly. He’d hoped to use it to get Li Ruobing to say more about Wu Chen, expecting some other answer, perhaps an explanation of how Wu Chen would handle the situation.

Or perhaps that he wouldn’t handle it at all.

There was no need to. Li Ruobing had no interest in Ding Ruilong anyway. His pursuit was entirely one-sided.

    But Li Ruobing’s answer was…

Wu Chen actually intended to have Ding Ruilong killed?!
