“She won’t. She won’t be hurt, and she won’t be jealous.” Wu Chen smiled.
“She won’t?” Wu Yurong’s fine brows rose. Her boyfriend had swept another woman up in his arms, and she would be neither hurt nor jealous?
No ordinary woman could accept that. And this was Li Ruobing.
“That’s right. She won’t.” Wu Chen smiled again, his tone light and easy. “I have other women. She’s never interfered. Where’s the problem?”
“You have other women?” Wu Yurong seized on it at once. “And Li Ruobing knows you have other women?”
“Yes.” Wu Chen nodded, still smiling. “Ruobing and I really are in a relationship. But… you know she isn’t an ordinary woman.”
Wu Yurong wore a drunken smile, her brows drawing faintly together.
She truly was drunk by now. Her thinking remained clear, but her expressions and her manner were no longer what they were sober. Her face, for one thing, held far more allure.
Of course Wu Yurong knew Li Ruobing was no ordinary woman.
And Wu Chen was certainly no ordinary man.
Even so… it was strange.
“Your other women… Mr. Wu, would you tell me about them? For instance… who?” She was wavering between her two choices now, and so she wanted to know who Wu Chen’s other women were.
“For instance…” Wu Chen considered a moment, then smiled. “Su Qingying.”
“Su Qingying?!” Wu Yurong’s eyes widened.
Su Qingying was Wu Chen’s woman?!
That was explosive.
Su Ruiwen was the richest man in Donghai. However one measured it, his standing sat half a head above the city’s other tycoons. And after Su Qingying seized power at the board meeting, everyone in Donghai understood that Su Ruiwen might well step down early rather than wait until his health failed past the point of working.
Su Qingying would soon be the one actually at the helm of the Jinfu business empire.
And she was Wu Chen’s woman?!
That was more explosive than the news that Li Ruobing’s boyfriend came from an ordinary family. Li Ruobing had always gone her own way; she ignored whatever her family arranged and did exactly as she pleased.
Su Qingying was another matter.
And Su Qingying still carried the title of Donghai’s number-one beauty.
As Wu Yurong turned it over, something flashed through her mind like lightning.
“The Jinfu board meeting…” The words came out on their own, half question, half disbelief. She could hardly credit the guess taking shape in her, and yet she had already made it by instinct.
“I arranged it.” Wu Chen simply smiled and nodded.
Wu Yurong’s expression froze solid.
Drunk, her control over her own face was no longer effortless, so the freeze lasted a long moment. Everything she was thinking stood plainly written there: sheer disbelief.
“How long did you spend arranging it? Who did you use?” she asked.
“A day, I suppose…” Wu Chen thought about it before answering. He did not tell her exactly whom he had used. It hardly mattered, and there was no need for her to know that much.
One day.
That alone was staggering.
Staggering enough that Wu Yurong wondered whether he was exaggerating. She found it odd in herself that she did not suspect a lie about Su Qingying being his woman. Somehow that felt reasonable, and the longer she thought, the more reasonable it became.
The only part she doubted was the single day. That sounded too outrageous.
What she did not know was that Wu Chen had not exaggerated at all. If anything he had padded the figure.
In fact he had used half a night—less than six hours from beginning to end.
It took Wu Yurong a long while to recover. She sat in silence.
She looked at him for a long moment, thinking back to when he had first walked in, then over everything the two of them had discussed in under two hours. The feeling was… very strange. Her life had been orderly, stable, steadily rising. Then Wu Chen had walked into this office, and waves had risen across all of it.
From the very first he had been bold enough to say something as deliberately ambiguous as I have designs on you.
He was extraordinary as well.
He was helping Li Ruobing win a free life? Even to the point of laying plans to destroy the entire Ding family?
He had helped Su Qingying seize power too? And since that touched none of the larger balance of power, he could simply… take care of it with ease?
He truly was extraordinary.
And young.
And handsome…
The look Wu Yurong turned on him grew steadily more subtle.
She had thought before about what it would mean to become the “intruder” in someone else’s love. She wanted only a lover, so she herself would not have cared. But the other side could not possibly be indifferent, and once they knew she existed, there would be trouble.
Now even that trouble was gone.
The scales in her heart were tipping fast.
Alcohol was a wonderful thing.
Without it, Wu Yurong’s thoughts would never have run this far. They would have run very differently. But with alcohol in her, thinking turned bolder. It also stripped away a measure of composure and left people less inclined to hide what they truly thought.
She really had drunk a great deal today. Caught in Wu Chen’s rhythm, they could not have talked this far if she had not.
He had held her with a matter that bore on the whole course of her life. She had no choice but to keep talking to him…
“Mr. Wu…” Wu Yurong finally spoke.
She seemed about to say something, then stopped. Instead she stood abruptly. “Excuse me. I need to use the restroom…”
“Of course.” Wu Chen smiled.
She went first to her desk for her handbag, then walked toward the restroom. Her step was reasonably steady. One bottle of red wine was enough to leave her well and truly drunk, but not so drunk that she could not walk, and she had kicked off her heels earlier. Barefoot, she was steadier.
The office had its own private restroom.
Wu Yurong went in and shut the door.
A minute later came the sound of the toilet flushing. A while after that she stood before the sink, having just shut off the tap.
She studied herself in the mirror, and the faint flush the wine had brought into her face.
She was no longer a young girl, and yet she was more womanly now than she had been in her youth—especially after drinking.
She looked at herself for a long moment, not entirely sure what she was thinking. She raised a hand, swept her hair back, then tugged her blouse collar straight.
“Wu Yurong, have you no shame? He’s only twenty-two!” she murmured suddenly at her reflection, scolding herself.
Then she laughed.
That drunken smile held allure without end.
She cupped her face in both hands, pursed her lips, then smiled and winked at herself.
Afterward she rummaged in her handbag and drew out the lipstick she kept for touch-ups.
Five minutes later.
The restroom door opened.
“Mr. Wu, it’s getting late.” Wu Yurong came out and made a point of turning up her wrist to check her watch.
Wu Chen had arrived shortly before three in the afternoon.
It was five already.
“Would you have dinner with me?” she invited him. “We can go somewhere else and keep talking…”
“Sure.” Sitting on the sofa, Wu Chen turned his head and smiled at her as she came toward him.
“Then I’ll have to ask you to wait a little longer, Mr. Wu. I need to change my clo—”
Ring, ring…
Wu Chen’s phone cut her off.
He took it out and looked at the screen.
Su Qingying was calling.
