Chapter 412: What Are You Going to Tell Them When You Get Home?
by cnwebnovelsChapter 412: What Are You Going to Tell Them When You Get Home?
Wu Chen had called Peng Wei.
The time had come to put him to use.
Wu Chen had great faith in the abilities of Peng Wei, “head” of what he considered the foremost unofficial intelligence organization in the country. And Peng Wei wasn’t just a man who directed things from behind the scenes. He was often out in the field himself, taking part in the photo operations personally.
His experience ran extraordinarily deep.
Granted, Wu Chen knew far more “major secrets” than Peng Wei did, and his own investigative ability was far superior. They weren’t even on the same level. Wu Chen, after all, could extract information under torture and then reset.
But!
Whenever many things had to be set in motion at once, one man couldn’t be everywhere. In situations like that, the investigative resources Peng Wei could bring to bear far exceeded anything Wu Chen could deploy himself.
Standing on the balcony, Wu Chen spent a full twenty minutes on the phone with him. He even had Peng Wei turn on his phone’s recorder and capture everything he said, because he gave him far too many names, connected individuals, addresses, and other details.
There was no way Peng Wei could have kept all of it in his head.
Once Wu Chen had laid out the assignments, Peng Wei took the chance to report on his progress with Zhou Shenglong, United Media’s top male star.
As he reported, his admiration for Wu Chen was beyond words. He worked in intelligence himself, so he understood better than most just how hard certain information was to dig up.
Over the past few days, working from everything Wu Chen had given him, he had successfully turned up evidence of Zhou Shenglong’s affair with Wang Yaoyao.
He had even obtained records showing that the two of them had checked into the same hotel one after the other on trips abroad.
The evidence was already enough to show something was going on between them.
Only the most crucial piece was still missing: recent photos of Zhou Shenglong and Wang Yaoyao meeting.
Even without them, the affair could be proven.
With them, the evidence would be conclusive.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Wu. I’ll put people on what you’ve assigned right away. We’ll run all of it at once. You’ll definitely have results within a week… As for Zhou Shenglong, we should have the photos in the next day or two…” Peng Wei said at last.
“Mm. Thanks for your hard work,” Wu Chen said with a smile.
“No trouble, no trouble at all. It’s my job. Hahahaha!” Peng Wei answered hastily, bursting into loud laughter.
There was unmistakable excitement in it.
Saying it was no trouble was a lie, of course. But Peng Wei genuinely didn’t feel tired, because he had been thrilled these past few days. Never before had he known what it was like for digging up huge scandals to be this easy.
The call ended.
Wu Chen looked at his phone again, scrolled for a moment, and dialed another number.
This time it was Zhuang Xiaodie.
Six or seven seconds passed before she picked up.
“Hello, Mr. Wu…” Her voice was thick with sleep. It was only seven-thirty in the morning; naturally she’d been asleep, and his call had woken her.
“Xiaodie, get ready. We’re going back to Modu,” Wu Chen said.
“Huh?” She froze, took a moment, and then said, “You want me to… go…?” Her voice grew smaller, as though she didn’t want to leave.
“I’m not sending you away. I’m going with you,” Wu Chen laughed.
“Oh! Okay! Yes, Mr. Wu, I’ll get ready right now!” Her voice lifted at once.
“No rush. Go back to sleep. Get up when you’ve had enough rest, and pack then. I’m just letting you know ahead of time. We’ll leave this afternoon…” Wu Chen said.
“Mm-hm. Okay, Mr. Wu,” she answered obediently.
“Oh, right. When you get up, if Xiaobao and the others are up too, tell Xiaobao I’m taking you to Modu on business and ask if they want to come back with us…”
He told her a few more things, then hung up.
Back from the balcony into the bedroom.
Phone down.
Back into bed.
Back to sleep.
Wu Chen hadn’t slept enough either. It was only his body clock that had woken him. He and Li Ruobing hadn’t gotten to sleep until after three in the morning. Perhaps because she knew he was leaving, Li Ruobing had been… especially enthusiastic.
In truth, Wu Chen wouldn’t be in Modu more than a few days. At the very least, he had to come back the day after tomorrow, because he had promised to take Li Ruobing home to meet his parents at the end of the month.
With her in his arms, he soon drifted off again.
Before he knew it, it was ten in the morning.
When Wu Chen woke again, Li Ruobing had already washed up and was sitting at the vanity in her pajamas, filling in her eyebrows in the mirror.
She had skipped work again this morning.
That was fine. She was the boss. And since the product launch, the company wasn’t so busy.
Hearing him stir, she glanced at him in the mirror. “When are you leaving for Modu?”
“This afternoon,” Wu Chen said, throwing back the covers and getting up.
He washed and dressed.
Around ten-twenty, Wu Chen and Li Ruobing came downstairs, fully dressed.
In the first-floor living room, Wu Jiao and Chen Xue were watching TV. They had been up for ages but hadn’t dared disturb the two of them.
“Had breakfast?” Wu Chen asked on his way down.
“We had some bread from the fridge,” Wu Jiao said from the sofa, waving a hand back toward the kitchen.
Her face was faintly pink, her manner a little unnatural.
Chen Xue’s too.
The moment Wu Chen and Li Ruobing came down, the two girls had gone a bit odd.
There was only one reason. Last night, in the guest room, they had faintly heard certain sounds… Girls their age understood that sort of thing, of course. They weren’t little kids anymore.
Still, they couldn’t help feeling a little embarrassed.
After a few words downstairs, Wu Chen and Li Ruobing went into the kitchen to make lunch. Wu Jiao and Chen Xue soon came in to help.
The four of them divided up the work and chatted as they went.
“Jiaojiao, what are you and Xiaoxue planning today? Anywhere you want to go?” Wu Chen asked, chopping vegetables.
“Nope. We’re going home. Mom called me again this morning. She even yelled at me. Said I was being a pest and getting in the way of your work…” Wu Jiao pouted as she said it.
Zhang Xiujuan wasn’t especially strict with Wu Jiao, but she was a girl, so her parents kept a somewhat closer eye on her than they would on a boy. Staying away from home for days on end was certainly out of the question. Her mother was already telling her to come home.
“Figured out what you’re going to tell Mom when you get back?” Wu Chen asked.
“What am I supposed to tell her…” Wu Jiao said.
An answer like that plainly meant she hadn’t figured it out.
Wu Chen had already explained why certain things couldn’t simply be told to their parents, and she had decided to go along with him. But… she could bluff her way through everything else. What was she supposed to do about a watch worth over a million yuan?
She still hadn’t had a chance to talk to him alone.
“Come here.” Wu Chen set down the knife, wiped his hands, beckoned to her, and walked out of the kitchen.
He wanted a word with his sister alone, to give her some instructions.
To Wu Jiao, that seemed very unusual. What made it unusual was that he clearly had something to say that he didn’t want Li Ruobing or Chen Xue to hear.
Chen Xue, fine. But her brother actually dared keep something from Sis-in-law? He was practically announcing that he meant to hide something from her.
Wu Jiao didn’t understand the relationship between Wu Chen and Li Ruobing.
And she had guessed wrong.
Wu Chen wasn’t hiding anything from Li Ruobing. He was only thinking of his sister. There were some things… that, if he said them to Wu Jiao in front of Li Ruobing, would make Wu Jiao feel awkward.
Turning it over in her head, Wu Jiao followed him out of the kitchen.
They went into the dining room.
Wu Chen sat down and motioned for her to sit too. Then he leaned in close, the very picture of a brother and sister holding a secret conference, and gave her a string of instructions.
A few minutes later.
Wu Jiao suddenly stared at him, stunned.
“Bro! You… You want me to say that? Is that really… okay?” She blinked at him.
