Chapter 223: He’s Coming to Donghai to Apologize to Me in Person!

The group paused and turned toward the voice.

Another party of diners had just finished eating and was heading downstairs to leave.

There were six or seven people in all, men and women.

The man at the front—the one who had called out—looked to be in his forties, with short hair and an average build.

Wu Chen knew who he was.

    Luo Wangsheng.

    Forty-seven years old.

Chairman of Modu’s Jingyang Investment Company.

In recent years, besides her work with Senlan Fashion Group, Wu Yurong had also built other businesses of her own, including funds and investments.

As a result, she knew quite a few people in the investment world.

Luo Wangsheng greeted her with obvious delight and hurried several steps closer to shake her hand.

“Ms. Wu, long time no see.”

Luo Wangsheng looked as though he had drunk quite a bit too. His face was flushed.

“It has been a long time. Boss Luo, you look as distinguished as ever,” Wu Yurong said with a smile as she shook his hand.

“Ms. Wu, you’re the one who looks as radiant as ever. Hahaha…”

Luo Wangsheng exchanged a couple of pleasantries with Wu Yurong before finally noticing the people beside her.

He had drunk too much, and his powers of observation were not as sharp as usual.

Only then did he realize there was someone else he knew.

Gu Ruibo, who had been leaning on Wu Chen’s shoulder, had already released him and straightened up while Luo Wangsheng and Wu Yurong were speaking.

Luo Wangsheng naturally paid little attention to Wu Chen.

    He did not know him.

The person he noticed was Gu Ruibo.

“Second Young Master Gu is here too…” Luo Wangsheng said.

His tone changed immediately, and his gaze flicked back and forth.

That reaction had everything to do with his connections and background.

Luo Wangsheng belonged to the Xiang family’s camp in Modu.

Like the Gu family, the Xiang family ranked among Modu’s most powerful families.

The two families could not exactly be called enemies, but they were competitors.

Members of their second and third generations frequently competed in business.

Luo Wangsheng had made his fortune by attaching himself to the Xiang family.

Not only was he not on the same side as Gu Ruibo, he had even competed directly with Gu in certain investment deals alongside Xiang-family capital.

Gu Ruibo had always worked in investment.

Wu Yurong had also spent the past several years investing and managing funds.

And now the two of them were having dinner together?

    What had they been discussing?

    A partnership?

    It was only speculation.

But no matter how Luo Wangsheng looked at it, this did not seem like good news for either himself or the Xiang family.

Gu Ruibo stood there, narrowing his eyes at Luo Wangsheng without saying a word.

He was visibly drunk and even swayed a little.

He truly had drunk too much.

But he was still capable of thinking.

He simply did not feel like acknowledging Luo Wangsheng.

Seeing that, Luo Wangsheng turned back to Wu Yurong with a reasonably natural smile.

“Ms. Wu, it looks like you were discussing some major business today…”

“What major business? We were just having a casual get-together,” Wu Yurong replied with a smile.

The two exchanged a few more polite remarks.

Then the two groups left the restaurant one after the other, called out their farewells, and went their separate ways.

Gu Ruibo had drunk too much to say anything more to Wu Chen.

He merely mentioned that they should meet again tomorrow before his bodyguards helped him into his car.

Wu Chen left with Wu Yurong and got into her car.

A few minutes later, they arrived at their hotel.

    It was nearby—

    the five-star Maowei International Hotel.

During dinner, Wu Yurong had used a trip to the restroom as an opportunity to instruct her female bodyguard, Chu Yan, to book it.

    Forty or fifty minutes later.

    Around eleven at night.

Inside the presidential suite on the top floor of the Maowei International Hotel.

Wu Chen carried Wu Yurong out of the bathroom in his arms.

    They had showered together.

Of course, they had done more than just shower.

Wu Yurong clung to Wu Chen and refused to let go until he placed her beneath the covers.

Only then did she release him.

He pulled the blanket over her.

Soon, Wu Chen lay down as well.

    It was time to rest.

Before sleeping, however, he still had one phone call to make.

With one arm around Wu Yurong, Wu Chen reached out with the other and picked up his phone from the bedside cabinet.

He was scrolling through his contacts when Wu Yurong turned over, nestled against his shoulder, and lightly hooked an arm around his neck.

“Do you know who that Boss Luo we ran into outside the restaurant was?” she asked softly, her voice gentle and languid.

“Luo Wangsheng. One of the Xiang family’s people,” Wu Chen replied quietly.

“You know?” Wu Yurong asked. “Then aren’t you worried that if the Xiang family finds out I’m working with Gu Ruibo, they might interfere?”

“They won’t know what exactly the two of you are working on.

“At most, they’ll uncover a few minor investments meant to conceal the real plan.

“And this is going to take several months anyway. Eventually, some people are bound to find out that you and Gu Ruibo are investing together.

“Whatever they can uncover will look like ordinary commercial activity.

“So what is there to fear about them finding out?”

Wu Chen turned his head toward Wu Yurong, who was only inches away, and smiled.

“That’s true, but I’m worried… Actually, even I don’t know exactly how far the rivalry between the Xiang and Gu families has gone…”

“I know the situation between those two families.

“Don’t worry. If there’s a problem, I’ll take care of it.”

Wu Chen turned toward her as he spoke, kissed her forehead, and smiled.

    “There’s nothing to worry about.”

    Wu Yurong’s expression shifted subtly.

She tilted her face up and kissed Wu Chen.

Then she lowered her head again, leaned against him, and tightened her hold on his arm.

With Wu Chen, Wu Yurong experienced something she had never truly known before—

the feeling of being protected by a man.

Wu Chen looked back at his phone and dialed Li Ruobing’s number.

    The call connected quickly.

    “Finished?” Li Ruobing spoke first.

“More or less. It’s time to get some rest,” Wu Chen replied with a smile.

Then he asked, “It’s this late and you’re still awake? Were you waiting for my call the whole time?”

Wu Yurong immediately raised her head and glanced up.

Then she lowered it again and rested against him.

They were close enough that she could hear the call clearly.

“I’m still at the company. Working overtime. I’m not going home tonight,” Li Ruobing said.

“Working that hard? Is it about the launch event?” Wu Chen asked.

“Yeah. It’s getting closer and closer. I’m exhausted,” Li Ruobing replied.

    Then her tone changed.

“My dear Mr. Wu, seeing as I’m working so hard, can you finally tell me what exactly you went to Modu to do?”

“Sure…” Wu Chen said with a smile.

He had never intended to hide the matter from Li Ruobing in the first place.

He had simply wanted to handle the matter first before telling her.

Over the next few minutes, Wu Chen gave her a general explanation.

There was nothing he could not tell her.

In short, he had arranged for Wu Yurong and Gu Ruibo to cooperate in “hunting” the Ding family’s peripheral assets.

The key to the plan was not how they would conduct the hunt.

It was why Wu Chen had been able to bring the partnership together in the first place.

That naturally came down to the matter of Dong Yuantao.

Wu Chen had already told Li Ruobing about that before, so there was no need to repeat it.

    A few minutes later.

Li Ruobing fell silent after listening.

Wu Chen had explained everything far too simply, as though he had handled it without the slightest difficulty.

There were far too many details he had not mentioned.

But Li Ruobing could imagine some of them herself.

She understood Wu Chen better than anyone.

She knew better than anyone just how terrifying he could be.

Wu Yurong had been listening the entire time.

When she stopped hearing Li Ruobing’s voice, she lifted her head again and leaned a little closer.

As she did so, a faint “mm” escaped with her breath.

It was barely a sound at all.

    Li Ruobing still heard it.

And she immediately knew who was beside Wu Chen.

“Sleeping with you really does make a difference,” Li Ruobing said, sounding thoroughly irritated. “When you help her make money, you do it on a ten-billion-yuan scale.”

“Wow, my dear Miss Li. That’s a strong smell of vinegar. It doesn’t sound like you,” Wu Chen said with a laugh.

“I’m not jealous!” Li Ruobing emphasized.

Because she knew Wu Yurong was there, there were some things she did not want the woman to hear.

    So she did not continue.

After a pause, she said, “Just keep pissing me off. Every day, you piss me off. Wait until you get back to Donghai… I’ll show you how I deal with you.”

“Deal with me?” Wu Chen laughed.

“Yes. Deal with you!” Li Ruobing shot back immediately.

“Sure… I’m almost looking forward to it,” Wu Chen said, laughing again.

“…Shameless,” Li Ruobing muttered, apparently imagining something.

Then she said, “All right. Get some rest.”

    “You too—” Wu Chen began.

“Oh, right!” Li Ruobing abruptly cut him off. “You made me so angry I almost forgot.”

    “What?” Wu Chen asked.

“Ding Ruilong called me today,” Li Ruobing said.

“What did he want this time?” Wu Chen’s tone was indifferent.

“He said…” Li Ruobing paused before finally telling him.

“He’s coming to Donghai to apologize to me in person.”

    Wu Chen raised an eyebrow.

Ding Ruilong dared come to Donghai?!
