Chapter 400: Wu Chen’s Ultimate Method for Handling His Little Sister!
by cnwebnovelsChapter 400: Wu Chen’s Ultimate Method for Handling His Little Sister!
Wu Jiao and Chen Xue didn’t notice anyone come in. It wasn’t that they hadn’t heard the door. They had simply stopped registering it, because there had been so many people.
They had been there more than half an hour, and from the moment Li Ruobing sat down, people had been coming and going nonstop. Bringing documents, bringing things to sign, being summoned for instructions…
At first, the two girls had looked up every time someone came in. After a while, they stopped.
It was always the same. Nothing worth seeing.
Li Ruobing turned, saw Wu Chen come in, and rose with a smile. But just as she was about to speak, Wu Chen raised a hand and put a finger to his lips, flicking his eyes toward Wu Jiao.
He obviously meant to tease his sister.
Li Ruobing’s smile turned wry, and she said nothing.
On the sofa facing the desk, some distance away, Wu Jiao and Chen Xue sat shoulder to shoulder, heads bowed, whispering over the Chanel bag in Wu Jiao’s lap.
She plainly adored it. She couldn’t put it down.
“…This is real leather, right? Do you think it’ll get scuffed, like here…?” Wu Jiao whispered.
“If you use it every day, it’ll definitely get some wear. But bags this expensive can always be repaired,” Chen Xue whispered back.
“Mm…” Wu Jiao pursed her lips, thinking, then lowered her voice further. “It’s so expensive. Do you think somebody might come after me for it?”
“You’re scared of bad guys?”
“Not exactly… It’s just, if it got even a tiny bit damaged I’d be heartbroken. And… if I carry this, our bags won’t match anymore…”
“That’s okay. I’ve got an expensive one at home, the one my aunt gave me for my birthday this year. It’s pink too. It’s not as pricey as yours, but it was still over ten thousand… Next time we go shopping, we’ll both carry pink ones.”
“Oh, right, right. I remember that one.”
“Where’d the bag come from?”
A man’s voice, amused, suddenly sounded right beside them.
The two girls jumped and looked up at the same instant.
“Bro!”
“Brother Xiaochen.”
Both greetings came out on reflex. Wu Jiao sprang to her feet. “Bro, when did you get here?”
“Just now.” Wu Chen smiled and tipped his chin at the bag. “I asked you a question. Where’d the bag come from?”
Wu Jiao tensed up at once.
She’d already been worried she would get scolded for accepting something so expensive, and now here was Wu Chen asking exactly that.
Her fingers tightened on the bag, and she looked a little timid. The two of them were very close; they joked and roughhoused all the time. But Wu Chen was five years older, and that gap meant that if he was really angry, she was still a bit afraid of him.
“I gave her the bag.”
Li Ruobing’s voice came from behind them as she stepped out from behind the desk, heels clicking. “Is there a problem?”
“No. No problem.” Wu Chen looked at her and smiled. “Just asking.”
As she came over, Li Ruobing shot him a mildly reproachful look. She knew perfectly well he was teasing his sister.
“Hmph!” Wu Jiao suddenly huffed.
From the way Li Ruobing had spoken to him, she had worked something out. Her sister-in-law had her back!
“What are you hmphing about?” Wu Chen turned to her.
“Hmph! Hmph! Hmph! I’ll hmph if I want! Sis-in-law bought it for me, so don’t you dare scold me!” Wu Jiao had found her spine. She was one step from pulling a face at him.
“Look at you, staging a rebellion.”
Wu Chen raised a hand… and planted it on top of her head.
Rub, rub, rub!
“Ah! Bro, don’t… You… you’re doing it again… You’ve messed it all up!”
This had been Wu Chen’s ultimate method for handling his sister “a thousand years ago”: ruffle her hair into a mess. Doing a girl’s hair was a hassle. Long hair took careful combing, and once it was messed up, she had to start all over again.
The thousand-year loop had changed Wu Chen. He had grown.
But he had no intention of changing the way he handled his little sister.
There was no need.
He could put on any face he liked in front of anyone else. With his sister, there was no need at all. He didn’t want her ever to feel that her brother had become a stranger.
“Sorry yet?” Wu Chen asked.
“Sorry, sorry! Bro, I’m sorry,” Wu Jiao said.
Only then did he let go.
Wu Jiao had forgotten the sofa was behind her. She took one step back and dropped straight onto it, landing on the sofa instead of falling. She hurriedly dug a little mirror out of her bag, flipped it open, took one look, and glared up at Wu Chen in fury.
She looked ready to explode.
“Keep glaring,” Wu Chen said, with a look that told her to think about what would happen next.
Wu Jiao folded at once. She stopped glaring, though she still pressed her lips together and sulked.
At home, she’d have dared to argue with him. She might not be able to “win” against her brother, but she could always shout for Mom to come take her side. Out here, she didn’t dare. And it seemed she couldn’t count too much on her sister-in-law to protect her either.
“So annoying. Always messing up my hair,” she muttered, pulling a little wooden comb from her bag to fix it.
“Ha!”
Li Ruobing couldn’t hold it in any longer and laughed out loud. “Are you two always this funny together?” She genuinely couldn’t help herself. The contrast was just too much.
If she hadn’t seen it with her own eyes, she would never have imagined someone as steady and composed as Wu Chen would “bully” his own little sister.
“Sis-in-law, my brother’s bullying me!” Wu Jiao looked up and tested the waters with a complaint.
“I’ll teach him a lesson for you,” Li Ruobing said with a laugh. She turned to face Wu Chen, reached up, and grabbed his tie.
Pulled.
Kissed.
Li Ruobing kissed Wu Chen right there.
Wu Jiao froze for a second, then very nearly rolled her eyes.
That’s teaching him a lesson?!
Sure this isn’t just showing off how in love you are?!
And wasn’t that a bit much? There were other people in the room!
Not that a high schooler Wu Jiao’s age couldn’t stand to see something like that. Still, it stirred up all her questions again.
How had they even gotten together?
How had a young, gorgeous lady CEO worth billions fallen for her brother, who had neither money nor connections?
And they were this lovey-dovey?
Li Ruobing kissed him twice, then drew back a little, still very close. Looking into his eyes, she asked under her breath, “Where’s An Menglan?”
“She went to the airport,” Wu Chen murmured, smiling.
“She left?” Li Ruobing sounded surprised.
“Yeah. Back to Modu.”
“And you could bear to let her go?” she teased, still holding his tie.
“My sister’s right here. Don’t bring that up,” Wu Chen said.
Li Ruobing gave him a look and let it drop. She released him and turned to Wu Jiao, who was combing her hair in front of the mirror while Chen Xue helped pick the strands apart beside her.
It had to be said, Wu Chen had a practiced hand.
Wu Jiao’s hair was a complete disaster. It was practically in knots.
“Jiaojiao,” Li Ruobing called. When Wu Jiao looked up, she gestured off to one side. “My lounge is through there. There’s a bathroom inside. You can wash your hair, and there’s a hair dryer…”
Wu Jiao looked over, then stood. “Thanks, Sis-in-law.”
She started toward it.
Washing it wasn’t necessary, but a hair dryer would make it much easier to deal with. She’d washed it that morning, so it wasn’t greasy. A quick blow-dry and it would comb out easily.
Just then—
Ring, ring…
A phone.
Wu Jiao’s.
She stopped, turned back, picked up her bag, and took out her phone. One glance at the screen, and she answered and held it to her ear. “Hi, Mom.”
“You little brat, did you call your brother?” Zhang Xiujuan’s voice came down the line.
“I did,” Wu Jiao said.
“When? I called him at noon and he said you hadn’t… Where are you now?”
“I’m with my brother. At his company.”
“Oh, you’ve already met up? Why’d you go to his company? Honestly, you’ve got no sense! Don’t get in the way of his work. He’s only just started there. What if his boss gets upset…”
“It’s fine, Mom.”
As she spoke, Wu Jiao turned to look at Wu Chen and Li Ruobing. Then her eyes lit up, and she shot her brother a look that plainly said just you wait.
“Oh, right, Mom! Bro has a girlfriend. Did he tell you?” she rattled into the phone at top speed.
“A girlfriend? Your brother’s seeing someone? He never said a word. How do you know? Did he tell you?” Zhang Xiujuan asked at once. Parents always cared about this sort of thing.
“Tell me? I’ve already met her! Mom, guess what? My brother’s girlfriend isn’t just super, super pretty, prettier than a celebrity even, she’s also really, really…”
Wu Jiao was about to drop a bombshell on her mother.
Her brother had started dating without a word to the family, and the woman he was dating was this unbelievable, top-tier lady CEO. Once Mom found out, she would definitely grill him from every direction.
