Chapter 209: Are You Fucking Done Yet?!
by cnwebnovelsChapter 209: Are You Fucking Done Yet?!
The moment Li Ruobing heard a woman’s voice, her expression turned both irritated and amused. Without waiting for Wu Chen to explain, she spoke first.
“Which woman are you with this time? Afraid Su Qingying will find out?”
In truth, Li Ruobing was relieved.
As far as she was concerned, Wu Chen could do whatever he liked as long as he did not get himself into trouble. Seeing another woman did not count as trouble.
“It’s not that I’m afraid she’ll find out…” Wu Chen said.
“All right, my dear Mr. Wu. You go ahead and keep busy…” Li Ruobing deliberately adopted a sugary tone. “We’ll talk when you have time. I won’t disturb you. I only wonder whether your adorable little Qingying will be heartbroken when she finds out…”
“Don’t talk like that. You’re giving me goose bumps,” Wu Chen said with a laugh.
“Fine, I’m done. Since you’re not here, I’ll ask Su Qingying to lunch and have a nice long talk with her. That’s all.”
Li Ruobing’s voice returned to normal.
From the sound of it, she intended to stir up trouble by telling Su Qingying that Wu Chen was with yet another woman.
But Wu Chen knew she was only saying it to make him nervous. She would never actually do such a thing.
Li Ruobing simply was not the sort of woman who went around sowing discord.
“All right. Talk later,” Wu Chen replied with a smile.
…
Modu.
Economically speaking, Modu was China’s foremost international metropolis. It was also the closest such city to Donghai, and occupied an exceptionally important position in the nation’s economy, culture, international exchange, and many other fields.
Wu Chen knew Modu very well.
Naturally, Donghai was the city he knew best. Of the 365,000 days and nights he had spent in the loop, most had been spent there.
But that did not mean he had never ventured elsewhere, or that he knew nothing of the outside world.
Generally, the extent of his knowledge about other cities was closely tied to their distance from Donghai.
The closer a city was, the more he knew about it.
The farther away, the less he knew.
And Modu…
It was the city he knew best after Donghai.
He had once spent a long time investigating certain people and events there, for two principal reasons.
First, it was close.
Second, Modu itself was unique—an international metropolis of more than twenty million people, where billionaires gathered in droves.
Of course, his knowledge was not so exhaustive that he had measured every corner of the city with his own two feet.
He had no reason to investigate ordinary people, or even those who had achieved modest success, unless there was something exceptional about them. His knowledge of Modu centered largely on prominent figures and the events surrounding them, along with certain unusual individuals.
Many other people and matters had come to his attention through their connections to Donghai. His investigations had led him to Modu, prompting him to dig deeper.
Wu Chen had come to Modu.
Not long after Li Ruobing left for work that morning, he drove to the high-speed rail station, bought a ticket, and boarded a train for Modu.
It was neither a holiday nor a special occasion, so tickets were readily available. There had been no need to book in advance.
The high-speed train reached Modu in two hours.
After getting off, Wu Chen made a phone call, then took a taxi to his present location.
He planned to return to Donghai in a few days.
He certainly intended to deal with the matter involving No Envy by the Abyss, but he had plenty of time. And since he had already come all the way to Modu, he naturally meant to take care of a few other things as well.
Dongpu District, Modu.
Jinling Plaza.
Ninth Dimension Bar.
The owner’s office on the fifth floor.
The office was enormous.
There was little furniture, and everything was finished in solid wood, yet the room also possessed a gaudy, glittering splendor. The clashing styles gave the entire place the unmistakable air of nouveau riche taste.
Behind a massive rosewood desk sat a very thin middle-aged man, perhaps only five foot three.
He looked to be around forty. His extreme thinness had hollowed his cheeks and made his face appear long. He wore his hair in a short crew cut and had on a plaid shirt. A string of collectible beads hung around his neck, while an ultra-limited luxury watch worth more than ten million yuan adorned his wrist.
His name was Mao Rusong.
He was the real power behind Ninth Dimension Bar.
Mao Rusong was an extraordinarily well-connected man in Modu, with an immensely complicated background. In jianghu circles, he was known as Fifth Master Mao.
At that moment, a woman sat sideways on his right thigh, wearing heavy perfume.
Her name was Sun Jiamei, and she had been Mao Rusong’s favorite woman for the past two years. Around thirty, she was pretty, heavily made up, and slightly plump.
Mao Rusong’s taste in women was quite particular.
He liked only one type.
Women like Sun Jiamei…
Slightly plump, mature women.
Three bodyguards stood on either side of the desk, six in all. Every one of them was over six foot two, broad-shouldered, powerfully built, and clearly trained.
On the other side of the office, near the door, stood another six or seven men. Their clothes varied, but every one of them had a fierce air.
Three more men sat on the sofa against one wall.
All were middle-aged.
All were trusted lieutenants of Mao Rusong.
It was quite a display.
Mao Rusong was a man who loved putting on a show.
More than a dozen people filled the room, all staring grimly at the young man seated across the desk. It almost seemed as though they had surrounded him with hostile intent.
Wu Chen had taken Li Ruobing’s call in front of them all.
“All right. Talk later.” Wu Chen ended the call with a smile, put away his phone, and looked at Mao Rusong again.
Mao Rusong had one arm around the woman on his lap. His left elbow rested on the arm of his executive chair, a sandalwood bracelet dangling from his hand as his thumb habitually rolled the beads one by one.
His sharp eyes, however, never left Wu Chen.
“Friend, why don’t you just come out and say it? Let’s not waste each other’s time. If…” Mao Rusong began in a dry, hoarse voice.
He was a heavy smoker.
Before he could finish—
Ring, ring…
Wu Chen’s phone rang again.
He had been in the office for less than ten minutes, yet he had already taken two calls. Before Li Ruobing, Su Qingying had called him as well.
This was the third.
Wu Chen took out his phone and glanced at the screen.
Song Xuan.
“Hello, Student Song…” Wu Chen answered.
Mao Rusong watched him take yet another call, and a muscle twitched in his cheek.
His patience had limits.
He drew a deep breath, set down the bead bracelet, picked up the cigarette pack on his desk, and put a cigarette between his lips.
Sun Jiamei, still seated on his thigh, immediately picked up a lighter and lit it for him.
Mao Rusong inhaled deeply and slowly exhaled a cloud of smoke, never taking his eyes from Wu Chen’s face.
“…Go ahead and release it. It’s fine. Mm…”
Wu Chen did not speak with Song Xuan for long.
She had called to invite him to lunch and sign the contract—the revenue-sharing agreement for the song. They had previously agreed to sign it before the song was released.
Wu Chen had given her the song the afternoon before last, but she still had not released it.
Unlike Wu Chen, she could not simply make a casual recording and upload it. She had spent the past two days recording, producing dozens of demos and gathering a large group of friends to listen to them.
She took the song very seriously and was constantly worried that her singing was not good enough.
She wanted the best version possible.
Today, she was finally ready to release the song, so she had contacted Wu Chen to sign the contract.
But Wu Chen was in Modu and could not return.
The formality meant little to him.
He told her to release the song first.
After two or three minutes, Wu Chen ended the call, put away his phone, and looked at Mao Rusong once more.
“I don’t know who paid you or how much they offered to make you this bold, but you…” Mao Rusong began again.
Ring, ring…
Wu Chen’s phone rang yet again.
The fourth time.
He took it out and checked the screen.
Wu Yurong.
He could guess why she was calling.
She wanted to ask him to lunch.
The cigarette still between his lips, Mao Rusong abruptly narrowed his eyes. He lightly patted the woman on the back with his right hand.
Sun Jiamei rose at once.
Mao Rusong yanked open a drawer, reached inside, and pulled out a handgun. Shooting to his feet, he aimed it directly at Wu Chen’s head.
“Are you fucking done yet?! Huh?! You screwing with me?! Can’t you smash that goddamn phone or something? Fuck! I fucking—”
Mao Rusong was furious, as though he might explode at any moment.
Wu Chen, who had been about to answer the call, looked at him. The natural smile remained on his face, though his brows drew together slightly.
He casually set his phone on the desk.
Then he stood without warning.
His hands crossed and twisted—
And the gun was in Wu Chen’s hand.
Too fast.
