Chapter 276: Wu Chen, the “Busybody”

South Second Alley, off Fukang Road.

Fukang Road lay to the alley’s west. To the east ran Anlong Street, known as a bar street. Donghai had quite a few places people called bar streets, and Anlong Street was only one of them.

    A few minutes earlier—

A GTR sports car with Modu plates had just pulled out of the parking lot in front of Night Owl Bar, a little over a hundred meters away.

As it neared South Second Alley, several cars parked along the curb started up and gave chase.

They boxed the GTR in front and rear, hit the brakes, and trapped it.

A group of people got out.

Nearby, another group of young men who had been drifting around smoking and looked like street punks converged on the scene.

Some pulled collapsible batons from inside their clothes.

    An ambush, plainly.

    “Get the fuck out!”

“Weren’t you hot shit in the bar just now? Get out!”

“Fuck you and your goddamn car!”

    They cursed.

A young man with dyed white hair walked straight up and smashed a collapsible baton into the GTR’s windshield, cracking the glass into a spiderweb.

More than ten meters off on the sidewalk stood another four or five young men and women.

They were clearly gathered around the one in the center—a tall, thin youth with punk-styled hair and a black leather jacket.

He had a cigarette between his lips. He narrowed his eyes at what was happening ahead.

These young people had not come to watch.

    The ones blocking the car…

were the ones they had called in.

    Vrooom—

    The GTR suddenly revved.

The engine let out a deep roar.

Then the car lunged forward and rammed straight ahead.

Everyone around it jumped clear in fright.

The GTR struck a van blocking the road at an angle, knocking it sideways, but it failed to open a path.

The GTR reversed, then rammed forward again.

    Boom!

    Still no way through.

    It was trying to escape.

Inside the GTR, the short-haired young man gripping the wheel had sweat on his palms.

The girl in the black dress in the passenger seat looked just as panicked.

    This was Donghai, not Modu.

However formidable they were back in Modu, they had offended a local power here.

This was going to turn ugly.

Who the hell knew how it had escalated to this.

    “He’s trying to run!”

    “Fuck him! Smash it!”

The white-haired young man waved his baton and shouted, then charged in first.

You could not get too close to the front or rear, where the car might hit you.

    The sides were another matter.

He rushed up and smashed his baton into the driver’s window, cracking it.

The crowd swarmed in, beating the car from both sides.

The GTR reversed again and swung its rear end around, nearly clipping someone.

They were all alert enough to dodge.

The road was completely blocked. The car was not getting out, whatever it tried.

And naturally no one was stupid enough to stop it with his own body.

    Vrooom—vroom—

    Another engine roared.

This time it came from a black SUV blocking the road. The driver revved the engine while turning on the hazard lights.

It looked as though the SUV meant to ram it head-on.

At that distance the impact could not be severe—they were too close—but it might shove the GTR sideways into the wall, or tip it over.

The short-haired young man panicked completely.

He even suspected that if they hauled him out of the car, they might beat him to death on the spot.

“Get ready to get out. Run that way—” he shouted to the girl in the black dress.

The GTR moved forward again, then swung hard and stopped.

The crowd sprang back in alarm.

The short-haired young man fumbled off his seat belt, shoved the door open, and ran for the nearest alley.

The girl in the black dress did the same.

At the alley mouth they caught each other’s hands.

    She could not run fast.

    She was in high heels.

He had to drag her along as they ran.

    Her heels went flying off.

    “After them!”

    “Get him!”

    “Fuck him!”

A crowd of young men chased them into the alley.

The two fastest caught up after barely ten meters. The short-haired young man let go of the girl’s hand at once, spun, and kicked.

    One man went down.

The other came at him swinging a baseball bat.

He raised a hand, snatched the bat away, then smashed it back.

The man dropped on the spot.

    He could fight.

    He had training.

    But—

there were too many of them.

As the saying went, two fists could not beat four hands.

It was not as though he had never been in a group fight. He knew there was no way he could beat this many people.

Having dropped the first two, he backed up two quick steps, grabbed the girl in the black dress again, and ran with everything he had.

    “Fuck, he’s trained!”

“Get him! Motherfucker thinks he’s in a martial-arts movie!”

    “Move! Get him!”

    Two people running.

    Ten or twenty chasing.

    The alley was long.

Soon he had pulled her to the middle of it.

    Whoosh—crack!

No one knew who threw the baseball bat. It struck him squarely in the back and bounced away.

The blow sent him staggering. He lost his balance and fell hard.

“Get up! Get up!” The girl in the black dress was so frantic she was crying.

She hauled at him until she got him back on his feet.

That brief delay was enough for the first three or five pursuers to reach them.

    “Motherfucker, still running?”

    A baton swung at him.

He shielded the girl and dodged.

The baton struck the wall beside them.

    He shoved her clear again.

    Stepped in and kicked.

    Another man went down.

    A fight broke out.

“Do you know who the fuck I am? Fuck!” the short-haired young man shouted.

    He had no choice.

He genuinely hated throwing his family’s weight around.

But now he was about to get killed.

“Who the fuck do you think you are? You come to Donghai and still act tough? Fuck you!”

    “Motherfucker!”

After that brief exchange, the three or five men had actually failed to gain the upper hand on him.

He had taken a baton strike and several kicks, and his nose was beaten bloody.

But he had dropped three more.

    He could not keep fighting.

The dozen or so behind them had caught up.

The girl in the black dress stood against the wall as though she had been scared witless.

Her makeup was streaked with tears.

He picked up a baseball bat and swung it wildly once, making two men about to close on him flinch back.

He seized the opening and ran again.

He did not forget the girl. He caught her hand and sprinted like a madman.

    His stamina was failing.

Fighting at full force burned it away fast.

He was breathing hard and could no longer run as he had.

The girl was worse. Fear had turned her legs to water.

They were caught again almost at once.

    Another fight.

The far mouth of the alley was already in sight.

“Ahhh! Help! Somebody help! Help me!” the girl in the black dress screamed.

Outside the alley, at the curb on Fukang Road—

Wu Chen and Zhuang Xiaodie heard the scream from inside the Lamborghini.

    Zhuang Xiaodie’s expression changed.

Her eyes went wide as she stared through the window toward the alley mouth.

The girl sounded so desperate that something terrible had to be happening. As another woman, Zhuang Xiaodie’s imagination instantly supplied every horror it could reach.

The moment the scream rang out, Wu Chen unfastened his seat belt.

“Stay in the car,” he told her.

Then he opened the door and got out.

Twenty or thirty meters into the alley, everything was chaos.

The short-haired young man was fierce, but he simply could not hold against so many.

Fortunately the alley was narrow, so only so many could come at him at once.

Otherwise he would never have made it this far.

Wu Chen appeared at the alley mouth with both hands in the pockets of his suit.

He took in the scene and called out, “Hey! What’s going on?”

    Someone looked at him.

No one paid him any attention.

Wu Chen started walking into the alley.

    A few of them noticed.

“Mind your own fucking business! Get lost!”

“You don’t want to die, get the fuck out of here!”

The girl in the black dress had already been kicked down beside the wall.

When she saw someone arrive who actually dared shout at them, it was like seeing a savior. Ignoring the pain, she scrambled up and staggered toward Wu Chen.

“Brother! Help! Please save my boyfriend!”

She reached him, stumbling. Wu Chen raised a hand, signaling her to get farther away.

    Then he kept walking forward.

The short-haired young man had been knocked down twice already.

Both times he had rolled and scrambled back up, but he was clearly at his limit.

“You still fucking dare come over here?”

A young man with a tattoo on his arm saw that the “busybody” was still coming.

He charged straight at Wu Chen, raised his baton, and swung it down.
