Moving against Ding Ruilong’s woman and daughter was only a small part of what Wu Chen intended. He didn’t merely want Ding Ruilong abandoned by everyone and living worse than death before he died—he would also bring the towering tree that sheltered Ding Ruilong crashing down because of him.
“Not admitting it?” There was a smile in Wu Chen’s tone. “Back when Li Ruotai caught you, didn’t you tell him about every filthy little job Ding Ruilong had assigned you? And then you turned around and sold Li Ruotai out to Ding Ruilong. Nicely played.”
“You—” The man started to say something.
“I honestly don’t know where you found the nerve to take from both sides. Oh, that’s right—how’s the transfer of your assets overseas going? Did it work? It must be very difficult.”
The line went abruptly silent.
Wu Chen waited patiently.
The Lamborghini came out of the underground garage and pulled quickly onto the main road.
“What do you want?” The man finally spoke. He seemed to have brought his emotions into line. His voice was low and level, and the question came very directly.
“Let’s meet. You choose the place, you choose the time,” Wu Chen said.
He knew that with a personality as cautious as this man’s, if Wu Chen set the time and place he wouldn’t come out. And some things had to be discussed face to face before they could be made clear.
The other side was silent a moment, then said, “I’ll make arrangements. Wait for my call.”
And he hung up.
Wu Chen put the phone away, then stepped on the accelerator and headed straight for the East District.
Time and place weren’t set yet, but he knew the man would set them very soon and would come. Wu Chen could even work out where the man would ask him to meet.
All he had to do was drive there.
Ring, ring…
His phone suddenly rang.
He picked it up, glanced at it, smiled with a slight frown, then answered. “What? Missing me already, when I’ve only just left?” The call was from Li Ruobing. Wu Chen had been downstairs a matter of minutes.
“Lu Guangnian just called me. He has something to discuss with you,” Li Ruobing said flatly, letting his teasing pass.
“Oh? What is it?” Wu Chen raised a brow.
“He didn’t say. He only called to let me know, and said he wanted to borrow you for a while…” As she spoke her tone turned somewhat strange.
Wu Chen was her boyfriend and also worked at her company, and Lu Guangnian was more familiar with her, so calling her first was unremarkable.
What struck Li Ruobing as strange was… a man as capable as Lu Guangnian—what business could possibly require him to come to Wu Chen?
If it were a matter of food and drink to thank him for the last affair, he would certainly have invited them both rather than Wu Chen alone, and he wouldn’t have made a special call to give her notice.
Brief as the call with Lu Guangnian had been, Li Ruobing could hear from his hesitant tone that something was going on between him and Wu Chen.
“Mm. I know.”
“What does he want with you?”
“Guess.”
“Say it or don’t.”
And she hung up.
Wu Chen smiled and glanced at the screen. A few seconds later the phone rang again. He had once sent Lu Guangnian a text message—the address of Lu Guangnian’s first love—so Lu Guangnian had his number.
He answered.
“Boss Lu. May your business flourish,” Wu Chen said.
“Finally got through. Brother, do you have time? Come out for lunch together?” Lu Guangnian invited him to a meal outright.
“Lunch… I’ve got things to do,” Wu Chen said instead. “Does Boss Lu need something?”
“Nothing, nothing. I only want to thank you. Hahaha, it’s all thanks to you. If not for you, I’d have been taken in by that bitch! Brother, you saved this old brother’s fortune and his life. Whatever happens, I have to buy you a meal and thank you properly…” Lu Guangnian said with a booming laugh.
You could hear that his mood wasn’t weighed down in the least. He was laughing out loud, and he…
