Chapter 371: Did You Sleep Well Last Night?

“It’s Miss Li,” Song Xuan said, her expression turning odd as well.
She hadn’t read too much into it yet. But after what had happened at dinner the night before last, she couldn’t help worrying about Li Ruobing and An Menglan being in the same room again. Heaven only knew what might happen.
An Menglan signaled for A-Li to get the door.
Inside she was panicking, but Li Ruobing was already here. Not opening the door was out of the question. If anything, that would only make her look guilty.
A-Li went and opened it.
Outside stood Li Ruobing, along with several bodyguards in black suits. When the door opened, she raised a hand to signal that they needn’t follow her in, then walked into the suite alone.
Today she wore a fitted pale aqua skirt and jewelry, with light makeup. Apart from a striking lipstick, her whole look was fresh and clean.
It was a fairly casual outfit.
Yet the impression she gave was unmistakable: the queen had arrived.
Her commanding presence was part of it. Her beauty was only part of it as well.
Her skin was in excellent condition. Song Xuan’s looks might score as high as 9.5, and she was far younger, but when it came to skin, Li Ruobing still had her beat.
“Oh, everyone’s here,” Li Ruobing said as she reached the sofas.
She even smiled.
That smile made An Menglan’s scalp prickle.
“When did you get here, Miss Song?” Li Ruobing asked.
“A little while ago,” Song Xuan replied in her soft, sweet voice.
Song Xuan was a little intimidated by Li Ruobing’s forceful personality. But she still felt slightly guilty about her earlier misunderstanding that Li Ruobing was some “older woman.”
As a result, she was especially nice to her.
As they talked, Li Ruobing walked over and sat down on the sofa right beside Wu Chen.
At the same moment, An Menglan caught Liu Jing’s eye and gave her a meaningful look.
Liu Jing understood. She was being asked to leave.
“Boss, if you don’t need me for anything, I’ll head out.”
“Go ahead.” An Menglan nodded.
Liu Jing made for the door, and as she passed through the entryway, she tugged at A-Li.
They both had to go.
An Menglan felt that now that Li Ruobing was here, some of what would be said next wasn’t fit for other ears. It wasn’t only about saving face. Whether or not this turned into an argument, everyone else had to leave first.
The assistant and the bodyguard stepped out.
“My dear Mr. Wu, did you sleep well here last night?” Li Ruobing turned to him, one hand resting on his shoulder, a smile still on her face.
“Well enough,” Wu Chen said with a smile.
“Was the bed soft?”
“Just right.” He nodded again.
A simple exchange.
But Song Xuan, sitting nearby, was stunned. She had caught the crucial point, of course: Wu Chen had spent last night here.
Her gaze darted to An Menglan, and she saw how strained her expression was.
Song Xuan’s eyes went wide.
No way. Could it be…?
“And you, Miss An?” Li Ruobing turned to her, still smiling. “Did you sleep well last night?”
“I… I drank too much last night. I’m still… a bit dizzy,” An Menglan said.
She desperately wanted to compose herself, but she simply couldn’t. She couldn’t even meet Li Ruobing’s eyes.
“So…” Li Ruobing glanced at Wu Chen, then back at An Menglan. “Did you two sleep together?”
She asked it point-blank.
Whatever had or hadn’t happened last night, Li Ruobing would never be the one in the wrong. And with her personality, she saw no reason to beat around the bush.
“Well… I was drunk last night,” An Menglan said, falling back on the alcohol again instead of denying it outright.
She wasn’t much of a liar.
And the truth was, she herself had no idea whether anything had happened last night.
“I slept in the other room,” Wu Chen cut in, with a small wave of his hand. He glanced sidelong at Li Ruobing and smiled. “Ruobing, you didn’t come all this way just to ask something so boring, did you?”
“Boring?” Li Ruobing shot him a sidelong look of her own.
“Jealous?” Wu Chen laughed.
“How would I dare be jealous, darling?” Li Ruobing replied in an exaggerated, coy tone, smiling as well. Then she turned back to An Menglan. “It’s the weekend, I’m off, and nothing’s happening at the company. I happened to have some free time, so I came to see… whether I’ve won my wager with Miss An.”
She really wasn’t hiding anything.
“Miss An, have I won?” she asked again, her eyes fixed squarely on her.
“No. You… haven’t. Not yet,” An Menglan forced herself to say.
Her moral standards were very high. So whenever she believed she had crossed her own line, she was thrown into a terrible panic.
True, Wu Chen had said he slept in the other room.
But that didn’t mean nothing had happened between them before he went to bed. And she had no way of knowing whether he was lying to cover for her.
More importantly, she had kissed Wu Chen yesterday. She remembered that much.
That alone was already damning.
Li Ruobing’s expression turned subtle at her answer.
Song Xuan was so nervous beside them that she had started picking at her fingers without realizing it.
Everyone could sense An Menglan’s guilt. She practically had I’m lying written across her face.
Li Ruobing already had her answer. Something had definitely happened last night. Even if the two of them hadn’t slept together, An Menglan must have done something that crossed a line. Otherwise, a woman born into a wealthy family, with all her years in the entertainment industry, would never have been this flustered.
And yet Li Ruobing didn’t call her out.
The wager mattered. But its ultimate purpose had never been to make An Menglan admit defeat, apologize, and stay away from Wu Chen.
It was to keep her in check.
To make An Menglan understand that if she was going to be the other woman, she had better know her place.
One Wu Yurong was quite enough.
And Li Ruobing very much liked the way An Menglan was behaving toward her now. Li Ruobing had said some outrageous things, yet An Menglan didn’t dare get angry. She avoided her eyes, and every answer came out sounding guilty.
This was very good indeed.
“So I haven’t won.” Li Ruobing looked at An Menglan again. “Then the wager continues.”
She acted as though she believed nothing had happened between them last night.
An Menglan quietly let out a breath of relief.
“Oh, Miss Li, it’s good you’re here. There’s something…” An Menglan spoke up of her own accord.
She wanted to change the subject. To skip past last night entirely.
“What is it?” Li Ruobing asked.
“While Mr. Wu and I were having breakfast…”
An Menglan explained about the paparazzi knocking on the door and snapping photos, and then Wu Chen getting in touch with Peng Wei. She went into great detail, and the more she talked, the more she said.
Once she had laid it all out, she added, “Miss Li, Mr. Wu and I are innocent, but paparazzi are very good at twisting things. If those photos get out, it’ll seriously damage both my reputation and Mr. Wu’s. And Peng Wei… he said he’d call the police.”
The reason she kept talking was that a thought had suddenly struck her. If Li Ruobing stepped in, this would be much easier to resolve.
The Li family was one of the mainland’s powerful elite families. No paparazzo would ever dare cross them.
Li Ruobing raised an eyebrow as she listened, then glanced at Wu Chen.
“What does my darling plan to do?”
“I’ll handle it,” Wu Chen said.
“All right. Then I’ll stay out of it,” Li Ruobing said.
And that was that.
She simply decided not to get involved.
It even gave An Menglan the strange impression that Li Ruobing planned to sit back and enjoy the show. It was bizarre. Wu Chen was her boyfriend. If he were exposed alongside another woman, her own reputation would take a hit too. And she was just going to leave it alone?
What An Menglan didn’t know was that Li Ruobing stayed out of it because she trusted Wu Chen. For something this minor, if he said he would handle it, then naturally he would deal with it easily. If she went and did something on her own initiative, she would only get in the way.
So doing nothing was best.
No one had ever understood Wu Chen better than Li Ruobing.
Bang, bang, bang, bang!
A sudden, frantic pounding at the door.
“Boss! Boss!” Liu Jing’s anxious voice followed.
“Hm?” An Menglan turned, then quickly got up and went over. “What happened? Why the rush?” she asked as she opened the door.
“Boss, look! Peng Wei just posted on Weibo!”
Liu Jing thrust a tablet into her hands.
