Chapter 490: Another Shocking Revelation About Wu Chen

Once again, Su Ruiwen could hardly believe it!

Much of what Li Ruobing had said earlier had been difficult to believe. But given who she was, the way she conducted herself, and the fact that he could verify many of these things with a little investigation, he didn’t think she was lying.

Wu Chen probably really was that capable!

And the strongest proof was Li Ruobing’s attitude toward him!

Today, Li Ruobing had, in a sense, spoken to Su Ruiwen from the heart. Her willingness to indulge Wu Chen, and the attitude evident in everything she said, showed that she was the woman most thoroughly under his spell.

For anyone to have that effect on Li Ruobing, his abilities and methods might truly have to be that extraordinary!

But Ding Ruilong was another matter entirely!

Wu Chen had brought down Shuangqi Real Estate… To put it bluntly, Qi Min and Qi Jun were merely the Xiang family’s dogs. You had to consider a dog’s owner before striking it, certainly, but a dog was still a dog. It could be sacrificed if necessary.

    Ding Ruilong, though…

He could be called the single most untouchable young scion among the third generation of the country’s powerful families. That wasn’t to say he was exceptionally talented. He had some ability, and among the privileged young heirs he was above average. You couldn’t simply dismiss him as an idle wastrel.

But Su Ruiwen, judging him by his own standards, could look down on Ding Ruilong’s abilities. He also had nothing but contempt for some of Ding Ruilong’s methods. The true mark of ability was to get things done properly without offending people, and Ding Ruilong was plainly nowhere near that skilled.

What made Ding Ruilong frightening wasn’t the man himself.

It was Old Master Ding’s extraordinary favoritism toward him!

Back when Ding Ruilong broke the leg of a young master of the Wei family, the incident had been enormous. It had even led to conflict between the Ding and Wei families, yet Ding Ruilong hadn’t lost the old man’s favor!

There were plenty of rumors explaining why the patriarch favored Ding Ruilong, but they were only rumors. Outsiders could scarcely know the real reason. The favoritism itself, however, was beyond doubt!

In that respect, even Li Ruotai couldn’t compare with him.

If Li Ruotai caused a catastrophe, the Li family would certainly protect him if it could. But he would also inevitably fall out of favor.

Ding Ruilong had caused far too many disasters and offended far too many people!

    Yet he remained perfectly secure!

He was the foremost figure of the Ding family’s third generation!

Seriously speaking, Su Ruiwen even thought Ding Ruilong was harder to cross than certain second-generation members of the Ding family who actually held power. So long as Old Master Ding was alive, anyone who dared touch Ding Ruilong would face the Ding family’s merciless retaliation, even if that meant going to war with another powerful clan!

Su Ruiwen stared at Li Ruobing for a long time without speaking. His brow furrowed slightly, then gradually smoothed. Finally he spoke with a deliberately light smile. “Miss Li, isn’t that going a little too far? I can tell how deeply you feel for Mr. Wu and how protective you are of him. There’s no need to tell me these things. I already believe he’s an exceptional man, but…”

    He left the sentence unfinished.

    His meaning was clear enough.

He thought Li Ruobing was exaggerating Wu Chen’s abilities, getting a little carried away with her claims.

Li Ruobing smiled without arguing. She lifted her coffee but didn’t drink. After a pause, she smiled again. “As I said earlier… that’s how Wu Chen always is. There are so many things you don’t believe he can do until after he’s done them.”

“Miss Li…” Su Ruiwen began, then stopped.

The more he thought, the more convinced he became that Li Ruobing was building Wu Chen up. But on second thought, there was no need to quarrel with her about it. More importantly, he wanted to hear what else she might reveal.

“Ding Ruilong… I’m sure you understand, Miss Li, that Ding Ruilong himself isn’t anything special. His talents fall far short of yours. But he doesn’t stand alone.” Su Ruiwen chose his words carefully as he looked at her. “Mr. Wu… intends to have him killed?”

He didn’t wait for Li Ruobing to respond before continuing. “But if Ding Ruilong dies, the Ding family will surely go mad, won’t they? If they can’t identify the killer, every suspect will face interrogation and death.”

“And Ding Ruilong’s relentless pursuit of you is public knowledge, Miss Li. Clearly, if he dies, Mr. Wu will be the prime suspect!”

“What’s more! Ding Ruilong’s death wouldn’t just offend the Ding family. It would offend your family too—the Li family! Because the matter involves you, the Li family might be even more anxious than the Dings to find and severely punish the killer!”

“You would be implicated as well. I know you don’t get along with your family. In fact, your relationship with them is terrible. And while you and Young Master Li are deeply devoted siblings, matters affecting the whole family clearly aren’t his to decide.”

“From what you just told me… I believe Mr. Wu is a very intelligent man. How could he possibly cause such a catastrophe, without regard for the consequences, merely because Ding Ruilong is pursuing you?”

Su Ruiwen spoke slowly, weighing every word. His argument was thoroughly logical.

He appeared to be disputing Li Ruobing’s claims, but in truth he was simply fishing for information.

He wanted to see what else she would say.

Li Ruobing had held her cup throughout his speech, almost unconsciously. She hadn’t taken a sip, even by the time he finished. She put it down, smiled, and said, “Boss Su, the reason I’m willing to tell you all this today is that you’re Qingying’s father. You’re also a businessman I admire. I trust that you won’t tell anyone about our conversation today. Am I right?”

“Of course,” Su Ruiwen replied. Something flickered in his eyes. Her words had caught his interest, because he sensed she was about to reveal another major secret about Wu Chen.

“Actually…” Li Ruobing looked at him with a smile. “My father came to Donghai some time ago. He met Wu Chen.”

“Oh?” Su Ruiwen straightened, suddenly alert!

Li Maoren had secretly visited Donghai?!

By comparison, Li Maoren was an even greater figure than Tang Jingbin! He was the Li family’s next patriarch! And he was only in his early fifties. He might even rise higher in the future!

“Your father met Wu Chen? He didn’t object to the two of you being together?” Su Ruiwen asked.

“He did,” Li Ruobing said, then added, “But after my father had one conversation with Wu Chen, he stopped objecting.”

“Hm?” Su Ruiwen froze, astonished. For a moment, the implications left him almost unable to think.

The news that Li Maoren no longer opposed Wu Chen and Li Ruobing being together was enormously significant! Everyone knew the Li and Ding families had begun cooperating four years ago. Although Li Ruobing had refused their proposed marriage alliance, Ding Ruilong hadn’t given up. The Li family had also turned a blind eye to the various ways Ding Ruilong sabotaged Li Ruobing’s business, which showed that the Lis still wanted the marriage to happen.

So if Li Maoren no longer opposed Wu Chen and Li Ruobing’s relationship, then the Li and Ding families…

Su Ruiwen remained stunned for a long while.

    He hardly dared to speculate.

“What… did Wu Chen discuss with your father?” he asked slowly, uncertainty and surprise flickering in his eyes.
