Chapter 218: There’s No Way She’s Wu Chen’s Woman!
by cnwebnovelsChapter 218: There’s No Way She’s Wu Chen’s Woman!
Back in Donghai, Wu Yurong looked visibly excited after ending the call.
There was no one else in her office except her personal bodyguard, Chu Yan, so she made no attempt to conceal her emotions.
She truly was excited.
Wu Chen’s unexpected call had contained almost nothing of substance. He had merely told her to come to Modu to discuss business.
But Wu Yurong knew what they would be discussing.
She was with Wu Chen now. She knew that when the Ding family eventually fell, not only would she avoid being dragged down with them—
she could even turn around and profit enormously.
She had wanted to invite Wu Chen to lunch that day partly because she genuinely missed him.
But she had also wanted to discuss, in concrete terms, how she could help push the Ding family toward collapse…
and how she could profit from it.
Of course Wu Yurong wanted her share of the pie.
In this matter, she intended to follow Wu Chen’s lead.
Clutching her phone, Wu Yurong gazed through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city beyond.
Only a few seconds passed.
Then she abruptly turned toward Chu Yan.
“Cancel the afternoon meeting. Have the cars brought around. We’re going to Modu immediately.”
…
Modu.
Inside a private room at Taoyuan Private Kitchen.
“I know her?” Gu Ruibo thought for a moment but could not determine who it might be.
Wu Chen had only said that Gu knew her.
He had not said how well.
That was far too broad.
Gu Ruibo quickly recalled the phone call.
He had faintly heard a woman’s voice.
She had sounded rather young.
In her twenties, perhaps?
He had even heard her say something along the lines of, “Miss me already?”
One thing was certain.
It was not Li Ruobing.
Her voice was far too distinctive.
This had to be a woman who had that sort of relationship with Wu Chen.
And Wu Chen was Li Ruobing’s boyfriend.
Yet he had other women…
Actually, that was not the important part.
It was no great matter.
Gu Ruibo had been married for years and already had two children, but he had women outside his marriage as well.
Li Ruotai was unmarried, but he had more women than anyone could count.
Even Li Maoren kept a mistress outside the family home.
Ding Ruilong had an illegitimate daughter, yet the Li family had still wanted to marry Li Ruobing to him.
Affairs between men and women were something those in the circles of major families—and even among billionaires—could “understand.”
Of course, some men concealed their other women from their families.
Others did not.
Gu Ruibo was certain that if Wu Chen had other women, he had to be hiding them from Li Ruobing.
Given Li Ruobing’s personality, if she found out…
there would be serious trouble.
Li Ruotai had spoken of his brother-in-law Wu Chen in almost unbelievable terms.
Wu Chen had even held a private discussion with Li Maoren.
That made Gu Ruibo suspect that Wu Chen’s relationship with the Li family went beyond simply being Li Ruobing’s boyfriend.
Gu Ruibo was not a man who liked to meddle.
Admittedly, keeping quiet might be a little unfair to his brother Li Ruotai.
Li Ruotai was fiercely protective of his elder sister. If he found out that his brother-in-law had other women, he would undoubtedly explode.
But!
Staying out of other people’s affairs was usually the safest course.
Gu Ruibo was being polite to Wu Chen now, but not because Wu Chen was Li Ruotai’s brother-in-law.
That was not the foundation of his attitude.
The foundation was Li Ruotai’s evaluation of him.
It made Gu Ruibo feel that even without the Li family, Wu Chen was someone well worth befriending.
Was he truly as extraordinary as Li Ruotai claimed?
Could Gu Ruibo toss out a casual test and actually receive a solution?
He was beginning to look forward to it.
If Wu Chen truly could…
then he would be nothing short of miraculous.
Forget merely befriending him.
Gu Ruibo would happily swear brotherhood with him.
While he was still thinking and speculating—
Creak.
The private-room door opened.
Mao Rusong had returned from the restroom.
Gu Ruibo and Wu Chen exchanged a glance, and neither continued their previous conversation.
Gu Ruibo even turned to joke with Mao Rusong.
“Old Mao, what’s wrong with you? We’ve barely had a few drinks, and you keep running to the restroom.”
“I’m not what I used to be.” Mao Rusong laughed and waved a hand. “I’m getting old. I can’t compare with you two anymore.”
They continued drinking, eating, and chatting.
Once again, the conversation wandered without any particular focus.
It was nearly two in the afternoon when the meal finally ended.
As they headed downstairs, Gu Ruibo invited Wu Chen to have tea with him.
He did so right in front of Mao Rusong.
Mao made no attempt to join them.
In fact, he was more than happy not to go.
The less trouble, the better.
What if the conversation somehow returned to the Ding family and forced him to make another decision?
…
More than three hours later.
A little after five in the afternoon.
Jinzhi Teahouse, Dongpu District, Modu.
Inside a private room on the fifth floor.
Wu Chen and Gu Ruibo had already been drinking tea for three hours.
Without Mao Rusong present, there were matters they could discuss more openly.
Most of their conversation centered on Ding Ruilong.
Wu Chen directly laid out numerous problems in Ding Ruilong’s businesses.
Gu Ruibo had believed he understood Ding Ruilong’s commercial affairs extremely well.
Yet Wu Chen told him things even he did not know.
At one point, Gu Ruibo called his subordinates and ordered them to verify some of the information.
They called him back within half an hour.
Everything Wu Chen had said was true.
The two men delved deeply into Ding Ruilong’s situation.
Gu Ruibo was Ding Ruilong’s business rival.
Wu Chen was Ding Ruilong’s mortal enemy.
They shared a common “enemy.”
Naturally, they found plenty to discuss.
Gu Ruibo was even beginning to feel that he and Wu Chen had hit it off right away.
And the longer they spoke, the more shaken he became.
Because Wu Chen seemed to know…
everything.
As the time approached five, Wu Chen told him an earth-shattering secret.
Ding Ruilong had killed Dong Yuantao.
That was all Wu Chen revealed.
Nothing more.
Yet that single fact was enough for Gu Ruibo to fill in an enormous number of blanks himself.
Wu Chen’s private discussion with Li Maoren, for instance.
Or what would happen if Wu Chen simply handed this information over to the Dong family.
If he did, Ding Ruilong would…
Gu Ruibo even immediately understood why Wu Chen wanted to take He Shiqin away.
She was a witness.
Now he understood everything.
Wu Chen wanted him to know.
And he had no fear of Gu knowing.
Because…
The matter had absolutely nothing to do with Gu Ruibo.
Nor did the Gu family have any genuine relationship with the Ding family.
Yet Gu Ruibo stood to profit from it.
If he ran his mouth and allowed the information to leak, he might lose that opportunity.
Worse, he might drag the Gu family into a wholly unnecessary conflict.
So he would not spread the secret.
Gu Ruibo disliked meddling in other people’s affairs. He devoted most of his life and energy to business. Beyond that, he avoided trouble whenever possible.
And when it came to their ambitions, Gu Ruibo was remarkably similar to Wu Yurong as she was now.
Did either of them lack money?
No.
They had so much that money had long since become little more than a number.
But who had ever complained of having too much?
Wu Yurong’s current goal was to achieve still greater commercial success.
She wanted to translate that success into higher social standing and an even more powerful network.
Gu Ruibo wanted the same thing.
That was precisely why Wu Chen had arranged for Gu Ruibo to be the first person Wu Yurong connected with.
Ring, ring…
A phone rang in the private room.
Wu Chen’s.
He glanced at the screen and answered.
“Here already?” Wu Chen asked with a smile.
“I’ve just entered the city. Where are you?” Wu Yurong replied.
“Do you want me to pick you up?”
“No. We came by convoy on the highway. I’ll go directly to you. Just tell me where you are.”
Wu Chen gave her the full address and the teahouse room number.
He also told her he had left his surname with the front desk.
Then he ended the call.
“Mr. Wu, she’s here?” Gu Ruibo asked with a smile, one hand resting on his teacup.
“Yes. She’s here, though it will take her a little while to reach us,” Wu Chen replied.
Another half hour or so passed.
“Miss, this way, please… Mr. Wu is in this room…”
The voice of a teahouse hostess came from outside.
She was leading someone over.
Wu Chen and Gu Ruibo both set down their teacups and turned toward the door.
Creak!
The hostess opened the private-room door, stepped aside, and gestured politely.
“Right here, miss. Please.”
She addressed the visitor as “miss.”
And the person who entered did indeed look like a woman in her twenties.
She wore sunglasses and carried herself with exceptional elegance.
After entering, she casually removed them.
Even without the sunglasses, she still appeared to be only in her twenties.
Gu Ruibo, however, froze.
“Ms. Wu?!” He shot to his feet.
The woman Wu Chen had summoned to Modu with a single phone call was actually Wu Yurong!
No.
That could not be right.
Impossible.
He must have misheard the earlier conversation.
There was no way Wu Yurong was Wu Chen’s woman!
