Chapter 193: Wu Chen! Can You Find Some Normal Women from Now On?

Wu Yurong had kissed Li Ruobing on the forehead.

    It happened far too fast.

Li Ruobing had assumed Wu Yurong was coming over to kneel and apologize, that she had finally yielded — and Wu Yurong really had lowered herself as she approached, so Li Ruobing had no guard up at all when the kiss landed. With anyone else, she would not have been caught so completely flat-footed. She had trained; her reflexes were quicker than an ordinary person’s.

It was precisely because this was Wu Yurong that Li Ruobing had been certain of one thing: however close the woman came, she could not pose any direct threat, could not strike while Li Ruobing was unprepared. The thought that there might be physical contact between them at all had simply never crossed her mind.

So she did not even flinch before the kiss landed.

A kiss on the forehead, held for roughly two seconds.

A woman kissing a woman could mean any number of things. It was not like a man and a woman. Close female friends could eat together, live together, shower together, share a bed. A kiss between them could be perfectly ordinary.

There were even actresses, best friends, who would kiss each other in public while posing for photographers, flaunting how close they were.

So when one woman kissed another without warning, it could be an attempt to take liberties. It could also be nothing of the kind.

    Wu Yurong’s clearly was not.

She and Li Ruobing shared the same orientation. They both liked men.

Which was exactly why Li Ruobing had no idea what Wu Yurong meant by it. Nor did she have time to work it out. After a stunned instant she raised a hand to shove the woman off, but Wu Yurong’s timing was precise — she had calculated Li Ruobing’s reaction. At two seconds she straightened and stepped back.

“Miss Li, I understand how you feel. Mr. Wu is very fond of kissing.” Wu Yurong’s face was all gentleness, her voice sweeter still. “So I’m giving you back the kisses he gave me. I’m apologizing to you. Are you satisfied now?”

Then Wu Yurong kissed her own palm and tipped it lightly toward Li Ruobing.

    A blown kiss.

    Li Ruobing’s scalp tingled.

“Oh, and Miss Li.” Wu Yurong smiled at her again, sweetly, softly. “It really was such a shame you weren’t there last night…”

Li Ruobing could no longer keep her seat.

She understood exactly what Wu Yurong meant.

    Stunned a second time.

    She was frightened.

She had known Wu Yurong was deep, calculating, thorough, never one to act on impulse. What she had never imagined was that Wu Yurong would be willing to go this far.

Wu Yurong spoke with her face full of tenderness.

Every hair on Li Ruobing’s body stood up.

She even began to wonder whether there was something genuinely wrong with the woman.

“Can Miss Li feel the sincerity of my apology? Or would you like me to—” Wu Yurong did not finish. Her expression and her eyes finished it for her.

“Ms. Wu! Have some self-respect!” Li Ruobing shot to her feet.

Wu Yurong watched her with a soft smile.

“Ms. Wu, I truly never expected… You have opened my eyes today.” Li Ruobing turned and walked straight for the front door.

    She left.

Every desire to keep talking to Wu Yurong was gone. What she wanted now was to be out of that house as fast as possible.

And the fact was, Wu Yurong had yielded. She had apologized. She simply had not knelt; she had chosen a method of her own.

More than apologized, even. She had offered to go a step further.

Li Ruobing genuinely could not take it.

Wu Yurong watched her go, high heels striking the floor, watched until Li Ruobing pushed the door open, stepped out, and let it swing shut behind her.

Wu Yurong smiled, then murmured with a quiet laugh, “Little girl. And you wanted me on my knees.”

Wu Yurong had apologized, but she had not lost.

She had driven Li Ruobing out instead.

As for kneeling — Wu Yurong reckoned that now and in any future she could foresee, given her circumstances, the only person she might ever kneel and apologize to was Wu Chen. She might even beg him for mercy. But that would not necessarily be a real apology. It would more likely be one small part of an enjoyable late-night game.

Whatever happened, she would never kneel to Li Ruobing.

She was fifteen years older. There was no possibility of bowing her head to the girl in so humiliating a way.

An apology, yes. By the plain logic of it, she was the one in the wrong.

But an apology was an apology.

Kneeling was out of the question.

She understood perfectly well that if she knelt today, she would never have a chance to turn things around. Forget everything else — suppose one day she and Li Ruobing both wanted to see Wu Chen, to meet him or settle something, and their times collided. If she knelt today, she would be the one giving way from then on, forever. She would never be able to compete.

Wu Yurong would not swallow a grievance like that.

Nor would she spend the rest of her life stepping aside for Li Ruobing.

But — she could not simply go to war with her, either. That was not the optimal solution. She had thrown everything into Wu Chen. She had given him the body she had guarded all these years. She valued every part of the man, and she knew that if her relationship with Li Ruobing openly soured, Wu Chen’s attitude would very likely turn against her.

Having already paid so much, Wu Yurong would never allow that.

Which was why she had thought of this.

The optimal solution, one might call it.

Kissing a pretty “little girl” on the forehead cost Wu Yurong nothing at all. As for how Li Ruobing reacted — whether she could accept it or could not — either way, the problem was solved.

    Either they became sisters.

    Or they kept their distance.

At the thought, Wu Yurong smiled again, then turned and went upstairs. She would catch up on her sleep and go into the company in the afternoon.

    A few minutes later.

Wu Chen was still driving home. Less than twenty minutes had passed since he left Wu Yurong’s place, and he had some distance yet to cover.

The Lamborghini flew down the road.

It was worth mentioning that after the car had been left downstairs at Senlan Building the previous afternoon, Wu Chen had not touched it again. But before going up, he had tossed the keys to Wu Yurong’s short-haired male bodyguard.

That morning, in the shower, he had mentioned to Wu Yurong that he would be leaving early, and she had phoned the bodyguard and had him bring the car to Lüyuan Waterside Villas.

“…All right, Atai. Three this afternoon. I’ll come to the hospital.” Wu Chen drove with the phone at his ear.

He was speaking to Li Ruotai.

Nothing remarkable in it. It was about Old Dao. Old Dao had woken up, and Wu Chen had called to ask after him and fix a time to sit down and talk.

They had covered most of it already.

“Mm… fine… that’s it. Mm.” Wu Chen hung up.

One hand on the wheel, the phone still in the other, he had not even had time to set it down before it rang again.

    Ring, ring…

Wu Chen glanced at the screen and smiled.

    Li Ruobing.

“Finished talking?” he asked as soon as he answered.

“Wu Chen! From now on, can you find some normal women? I’m begging you, all right? How is it that every single one you find seems to have something psychologically wrong with her?” Li Ruobing came in hot, and beneath the anger was something distinctly miserable, the sound of a woman who had been badly rattled.
