Chapter 376: He’s Risking His Neck!
by cnwebnovelsChapter 376: He’s Risking His Neck!
Peng Wei really was good at what he did.
Working from the timing, Wu Chen could tell that after pulling his intelligence together, Peng Wei couldn’t have reached Donghai any earlier than three or four in the afternoon.
Even assuming four, he’d been in the city a little over two hours.
Pinpointing someone in just over two hours, in a bustling city of more than ten million people, was beyond any ordinary paparazzo.
Wu Chen wasn’t surprised.
He knew how cautious Peng Wei was.
He knew how the man worked.
None of it was beyond what he’d anticipated.
There couldn’t be more than a handful of blue latest-model Lamborghinis like his in all of Donghai. And what Wu Chen usually drove these days was no secret in the city.
For someone as well connected as Peng Wei, a few questions to friends, and friends of friends, someone at the traffic police perhaps, would be enough to find out where Wu Chen’s car had last been seen.
Wu Chen glanced at the mirror a few more times, then looked away.
The light turned green.
He stepped on the gas…
He wasn’t actually driving very fast.
Being tailed by Peng Wei didn’t strike Wu Chen as such a terrible thing.
Peng Wei was only able to follow him because Wu Chen was letting him…
Half an hour later.
Laopinxuan Cantonese Restaurant.
The Lamborghini slowed as it approached and pulled smoothly over to the curb.
Before Wu Chen had even gotten out, he spotted a young woman of extraordinary beauty and striking figure standing gracefully on the sidewalk not far from the entrance.
A pale pink dress and glittering high heels made her look almost like a fairy.
Heads turned in droves.
Fortunately, Laopinxuan catered to an elite clientele. The diners coming and going were hardly ordinary people; they cared about appearances and decorum, and no one went over to try their luck.
It was Zhuang Xiaodie.
She had gotten there ahead of him.
And she hadn’t gone in.
She was waiting outside.
The moment the Lamborghini stopped, Zhuang Xiaodie noticed it and hurried over, heels clicking briskly against the pavement.
Wu Chen opened the door and stepped out.
“Mr. Wu.” Zhuang Xiaodie greeted him, all smiles, sweet and demure.
“When did you get here? Why didn’t you go in?” Wu Chen asked with a smile.
“Sister Li told me to wait for you and bring you in,” Zhuang Xiaodie said.
As she spoke, she slipped her arm through his as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
“Then let’s wait a bit. They should be here soon,” Wu Chen said.
He had called Li Ruobing again just before arriving. She’d said they were still on the road, stuck in traffic, and would be a while yet.
That was true enough.
Evening rush hour wasn’t over.
Wu Chen knew how to dodge the jammed roads.
Li Ruobing and the others didn’t.
The two of them stood by the car and chatted.
“New?” Wu Chen had noticed the diamond earrings Zhuang Xiaodie was wearing. From the quality of the stones, they had to be worth tens of thousands of yuan. Not long ago, she could never have afforded a pair like that.
Of course, she had plenty of money now.
Wu Chen had given her a bank card with fifty million yuan on it.
“Sister Qiqi gave them to me,” Zhuang Xiaodie explained quickly. “I gave Sister Qiqi a present too.”
Wu Chen raised an eyebrow and smiled.
“Well done.”
Zhuang Xiaodie was very thoughtful.
She knew Wu Chen wanted her to build good relations with Tang Xinbao and Guo Qiqi, ideally to become close friends with Guo Qiqi. That would do wonders for her future career in Modu.
So that was exactly what she had done.
Wu Chen didn’t need to spell out every little thing for her.
Zhuang Xiaodie had been trained.
His praise left her glowing inside.
And not just because of the praise.
He had noticed something different about her today.
“Mr. Wu, look at me today… Is anything else different?” Zhuang Xiaodie pressed her lips together and asked softly, smiling.
“Your hair,” Wu Chen said with a smile.
A question like that was never going to trip him up.
His memory was very nearly photographic.
Zhuang Xiaodie’s smile grew sweeter still.
She glanced around, then quickly kissed him on the cheek.
They looked like any ordinary couple standing beside their car, whispering and being a little sweet on each other.
“Are Tang Xinbao and the others at home?” Wu Chen asked.
“No. We’d just finished shopping when Sister Li called me…” Zhuang Xiaodie explained.
Tang Xinbao’s injuries were mostly healed. A few bruises still showed on his face, but going out was no problem.
For the past two days, Zhuang Xiaodie, Tang Xinbao, and Guo Qiqi had been going out together as a trio.
Shopping, shopping, shopping.
Eating, eating, eating.
Fun, fun, fun.
Yesterday, Zhuang Xiaodie and Guo Qiqi had even gone for beauty treatments together.
This afternoon had been more shopping.
That was why Zhuang Xiaodie had arrived before Wu Chen. She’d already been out when Li Ruobing got in touch, close by, and had simply taken a taxi straight over.
At an intersection several dozen meters away.
The Touareg sat parked by the curb.
Its window was down, and a long black lens jutted out like a cannon barrel, firing off shot after shot in Wu Chen’s direction.
It had already taken a great many.
At that distance, Peng Wei’s gear, worth well over a hundred thousand yuan, had no trouble at all.
Every image was razor sharp.
Since Wu Chen and Zhuang Xiaodie were just standing by the car, doing nothing else worth noting, Peng Wei drew the camera back inside for the moment.
He bent his head and scrolled through the shots on the camera’s little screen.
He’d gotten everything.
The camera had burst mode, so he’d even caught the exact instant Zhuang Xiaodie kissed Wu Chen.
Peng Wei zoomed in on the image and frowned slightly.
Was the girl in the photo Li Ruobing?
Peng Wei didn’t know what Li Ruobing looked like.
While shooting, he had assumed it was her.
But now, enlarging the image, he had the feeling…
this girl was too young.
However well Li Ruobing looked after herself, she shouldn’t have that kind of youthful air.
Something didn’t add up.
Peng Wei tilted his head and glanced outside again. Keeping one eye on Laopinxuan’s entrance, he took out his phone.
He opened the browser and ran a quick search:
Huancai Fashion.
He had already found out which company Li Ruobing ran.
There was no need to ask anyone for her photo. She ran a large company; there was bound to be information about her online, a photo at the very least.
And there was.
He found it immediately.
Huancai Fashion’s new-product launch had wrapped up only a few days ago, so the search results were full of fresh coverage.
As Huancai’s president, Li Ruobing naturally featured in it.
Peng Wei opened an article at random, and there she was.
The Li Ruobing in the news matched every rumor about her: long, straight black hair, glasses, a tailored executive suit, a faint chill about her, every inch the domineering lady CEO.
She looked nothing like the girl in Peng Wei’s photos.
Peng Wei’s expression turned peculiar, something that was not quite a smile.
He had barely arrived in Donghai, and already he’d stumbled onto something big.
This Wu Chen really had nerve.
He was risking his neck!
“Brother Peng, heads up!” the driver said suddenly.
In the passenger seat, Peng Wei looked up at once toward Wu Chen.
Zhuang Xiaodie had let go of Wu Chen’s arm and quickly stepped two paces aside, putting some distance between them.
And in the direction they were both looking, a convoy had pulled up.
Five vehicles in all.
Bodyguards climbed out of the front and rear cars.
The one in the middle was a Mercedes-Maybach.
Three girls, or rather women, emerged from the front passenger seat and the back.
Li Ruobing was one of them.
And besides Li Ruobing, Peng Wei also “recognized” the woman who stepped out of the back seat with her:
Su Qingying, Donghai’s number-one beauty.
The girl from the front passenger seat was younger, eighteen perhaps.
Mu Qianqian.
The two groups met and exchanged a few words.
They were too far away for Peng Wei to hear.
Then he watched Li Ruobing slip her arm through Wu Chen’s.
The group headed into the restaurant with a few bodyguards in tow.
Most of the others stayed outside.
Peng Wei put it together.
They had actually arranged to have dinner together.
So Li Ruobing definitely knew that first girl.
And when Li Ruobing showed up, that girl had deliberately put some distance between herself and Wu Chen, looking for all the world as though she were afraid Li Ruobing might notice something.
This Wu Chen…
He’d even fool around with someone from her own circle. Right under Li Ruobing’s nose!
He really was risking his neck.
Peng Wei was starting to feel the thrill.
Wu Chen was no celebrity, yet Peng Wei had the same feeling he got when he was about to land a massive scandal on a superstar.
Click.
Peng Wei pushed open the car door.
He stepped out and tilted his head back, scanning the buildings on both sides of the street.
He was working out which building across the way, and which room in it, would give him a line through the windows into the private dining room.
