Chapter 365: Where Are My Clothes? Where Are My Clothes?

The bedroom of the presidential suite could only be called enormous, every detail of its furnishing and decor speaking of refinement and luxury.

An Menglan’s pajamas still hung over the back of the chair at the vanity. She had slept here the night before, so the room already carried small signs of use.

Wu Chen carried the drunken, sleeping An Menglan to the bed and laid her down gently.

    She did not wake.

At this point he could have slapped her and she probably would not have stirred. Alcohol was powerful. She would simply have to sleep it off.

Wu Chen raised his wrist and checked his watch again.

    Past ten at night already.

He bent over, shifted her farther onto the bed, and drew the covers up. Then his hands stilled.

    He thought for a moment.

Wu Chen straightened, took out his phone, paused again, and thought a little longer.

He was not, of course, wondering whether to do anything to An Menglan.

    Wu Chen was not scum.

That sort of thing had to be mutual. There was no possibility of him touching a woman who had drunk herself unconscious.

    Besides.

Taking ten thousand steps back, Wu Chen had never intended for anything to happen between himself and An Menglan today.

Even if she had been sober, had that been what he wanted, the day would not have unfolded this way at all. He could have taken another route and made An Menglan come to him of her own accord.

But had he done that, there would have been no future between them.

An Menglan’s character was unlike the other women’s.

Li Ruobing had given orders to have people killed. For An Menglan a thing like that was beyond imagining.

She had her own moral lines.

And she knew Wu Chen had a girlfriend.

So if something really had happened between them today, afterward she would almost certainly have run from it. She would know she had done wrong, and the guilt would drive her to keep as far from Wu Chen as she could.

What Wu Chen was actually considering was far simpler.

Sleeping in her clothes would be uncomfortable, and they would come out badly creased.

He weighed calling An Menglan’s assistant, Liu Jing, then thought better of it.

At this point he was not supposed to know Liu Jing’s number.

    Even though he did.

Wu Chen turned and left the bedroom.

Then he left the presidential suite.

The corridor outside was brightly lit and resplendent, and empty. At this hour, naturally, there was no one about.

He walked straight to the door across the hall.

The room opposite the presidential suite was not another presidential suite but a lower-tier executive suite, a matter of which way the living room faced. On the fifteenth floor only the south-facing rooms were presidential suites. South-facing rooms got the sun.

He stopped in front of the executive suite and knocked.

    Knock, knock.

The door opened almost at once.

    It was the bodyguard, A-Li.

“Mr. Wu?” A-Li looked at him in surprise, plainly wondering what had brought him knocking.

“I’m looking for Assistant Liu,” Wu Chen said with a smile.

    “Mr. Wu?”

Liu Jing’s voice came immediately from inside. She was in the executive suite’s living room and had heard him.

The bodyguard and the assistant were both staying in this room.

Separately, of course. The executive suite had two bedrooms.

“Mr. Wu, is something wrong?” Liu Jing came to the doorway.

A-Li was still in his suit, neat as ever, while Liu Jing had already changed into pajamas, a very conservative long cotton nightgown.

She and A-Li were not a couple, after all.

“Could you come over for a moment? Miss An…” Wu Chen gestured behind him, smiling.

    A minute later.

Wu Chen was back in An Menglan’s bedroom, Liu Jing following in pajamas and slippers.

He stopped at the doorway and gestured toward An Menglan.

“She drank too much. It wouldn’t really be appropriate for me to…” He left it unfinished, though the meaning was perfectly clear. “I’ll have to trouble you, Assistant Liu.”

“Ah…” Liu Jing looked surprised, then broke into a grin. “What trouble? She’s my boss. Thank you, Mr. Wu…”

“Then I’ll get some rest. I’ll leave her to you.” Wu Chen smiled.

“Good night, Mr. Wu,” Liu Jing said, smiling too.

He turned away, crossed the living room, and went into the bedroom on the other side.

The presidential suite naturally had more than one bedroom. It was already late, and Wu Chen had drunk a great deal himself, so there was no real need to go home.

Liu Jing turned her head and watched him go, and her expression shifted slightly.

In truth she had not much liked Wu Chen.

She had no idea what spell he had cast on her boss to make An Menglan sign a revenue-sharing contract as outrageous as that one.

But her impression of him improved considerably now.

    Quite the gentleman.

    And rather considerate.

She thought for a moment, and when she heard the door across the living room close, she gathered herself.

First she shut An Menglan’s bedroom door. Then she went over and began undressing her.

Liu Jing knew her boss slept without clothes, so she did not leave a single thing on her.

Afterward she adjusted An Menglan’s pillow and covers several times over, making sure she would sleep comfortably and not wake with a stiff neck.

    An Menglan never woke.

She showed not the slightest sign of waking.

Liu Jing knew that although her boss loved to drink, her tolerance was excellent and she was almost never drunk.

And no one could press drinks on her.

    So.

Just how happy had she been today, to drink this much?

At last Liu Jing tucked the covers around her, turned on the air conditioning and set the temperature, then dropped all the clothes she had removed into the laundry basket.

Only once everything was settled did she leave.

    At the same time.

In the smaller bedroom of the presidential suite, Wu Chen was already washing up.

Every bedroom in the suite had its own bathroom, stocked with toiletries. Very convenient.

After showering he went to bed as well.

    —

    July 26, 2020.

    A new day.

    Seven in the morning.

Wu Chen opened his eyes exactly on time and smiled at the hotel ceiling.

Time was still moving forward as it should. For a man who had been trapped in the same day for a thousand years, a life that did not repeat itself was the most beautiful thing there was.

He had not gone to bed particularly late. Though he had drunk a great deal, a full night’s sleep had left him feeling fresh.

There was no need to lie back down.

He got up, washed, and dressed.

Around a quarter past seven, Wu Chen came out of the bedroom.

The living room was empty. The door across the way was still closed. An Menglan was naturally not up yet.

Her tolerance might be good, but it could not compare with his.

He sat down on the living-room sofa, scrolled his phone for a while, then picked up the landline on the side table and used the speed dial for room service.

“Send up breakfast. The Wellington set. Medium-well on the steak,” he said the moment the call connected.

“How many servings, sir?” a pleasant female voice asked.

“Hm… two,” he said after a moment’s thought.

“Beef Wellington takes rather a long time to prepare, sir. Would that be all right? If not, you’re welcome to choose something else…”

“That’s fine,” Wu Chen said with a smile.

He really was a little hungry.

He had drunk plenty the day before but eaten very little.

The plan was to have breakfast, and if An Menglan was still asleep and nothing else came up, he would leave first.

After ordering, he picked up the remote and switched on the television.

    Time for the morning news.

Before he noticed, it was eight o’clock.

    In the suite’s master bedroom.

    Ring, ring…

A phone began ringing inside the handbag on the cabinet.

An Menglan woke with a start.

She rolled over, groped around half asleep, dragged the bag to her, opened it out of habit, took out her phone, and looked at the screen.

    Song Xuan was calling.

    An Menglan answered.

“Hello, Miss Song. Ahem.” She cleared her throat as she spoke.

“Miss An, are you at the hotel?” Song Xuan asked sweetly.

“I am. Just getting up.” An Menglan glanced at the clock on the bedside cabinet.

“Then can I come see you?” Song Xuan asked.

“Mm. Of course,” An Menglan said.

“All right, I’ll talk to you when I get there. Bye-bye.”

    “Bye.”

She hung up, tossed the phone aside, and sat up.

She was still foggy, and reached up to scratch at her hair.

She had the feeling she had forgotten something.

After a while it came back to her.

    Last night.

    Drinking with Wu Chen. Singing.

    And then.

A great deal of it was simply gone.

She still remembered that she seemed to have kissed Wu Chen, but she could not remember how she had gotten back to the bedroom, or when she had fallen asleep.

As she thought, her face changed.

As though something had struck her, she looked down at herself.

Then she lifted the covers and looked underneath.

    Her expression changed violently.

    Where were her clothes?

    Where were her clothes?

    Who had taken them off?
