Chapter 296: The Impulse to Throw Herself Into It
by cnwebnovelsChapter 296: The Impulse to Throw Herself Into It
Wu Chen took a USB drive from his pocket and handed it to Wu Yurong.
Wu Yurong held it up and looked at the ordinary USB drive Wu Chen had been using since his university days, then looked back at him and asked sweetly, “This? What is it?”
“For now… you can think of it as a gift.” Wu Chen smiled, then added, “Actually, not exactly. You’ll understand once you’ve looked at it. We’ll talk after you finish.”
“Then I’ll take a look…” Wu Yurong said, releasing him and walking toward the desk.
“I have to go,” Wu Chen suddenly said again. “Oh, right. Lend me a car.”
“You need a car? Why call it borrowing? Which one do you want?” Wu Yurong stood beside the desk and looked back at him.
Then she shifted a couple of steps and pulled open a desk drawer.
It was filled with car keys.
“Porsche, Bentley, or… the Ferrari’s at home. There’s a McLaren downstairs. Do you want—”
“The cheapest one. Something low-key,” Wu Chen interrupted.
“If you want low-key… the A8?” Wu Yurong took an Audi A8 key from the drawer, looked up at him, and gave it a little shake.
“That works.” Wu Chen nodded.
He tossed the key to his Lamborghini onto the desk, took the Audi A8 key, leaned in to kiss Wu Yurong once more, then hurried toward the door.
Just as he reached it, Wu Chen suddenly stopped and turned back.
“Sister Rong,” he called.
“What is it?” Wu Yurong, who had just sat down, looked up at him.
“For the next two hours.” Wu Chen held up two fingers, gave them a little shake, and smiled. “Don’t call me. I have something to do, and I can’t be disturbed.”
“Why do you think I’d bother you for no reason?” Wu Yurong asked softly with a sweet smile.
Then, with an unmistakable implication in her words, she added, “You’ve spent the last two days glued to Li Ruobing. Have I ever suddenly interrupted the two of you?”
“Jealous?” Wu Chen smiled.
“Not at all.” Wu Yurong smiled too, denying it with warm light filling her eyes.
“Ha.” Wu Chen laughed.
He said nothing more, merely lifted a hand in farewell. “I’m going.”
Wu Chen pushed open the door and left the office.
For more than ten full seconds after he was gone, Wu Yurong kept staring at the office door through which he had left.
At last, she murmured, “Strange.”
She really did find it strange.
She had no idea what Wu Chen was doing today.
At noon, he had asked her to track several cars. Now he had come to give her a USB drive and switch cars. And he still had something else to do afterward?
He had even specifically told her not to disturb him?
Why would she suddenly disturb him in the first place?
Could he see the future?
Pulling her thoughts back, Wu Yurong looked down at the USB drive in her hand again.
What could be inside?
It was a gift, but also not a gift…
What could it be?
Wu Yurong could not guess.
She would know once she looked.
She plugged the USB drive into her computer and looked at the screen.
Once the computer recognized it, she clicked the mouse, opened the drive, and saw that it contained only one compressed archive.
She extracted it.
More than a thousand files of varying sizes appeared, sorted by their last modified times.
Wu Yurong opened one and looked at it.
Before long, she opened another.
Then several more in succession.
After that, judging by the filenames, she opened several specific files.
Very quickly—
Wu Yurong was stunned.
She had been looking for only a few minutes and had seen only a tiny fraction of the material, yet the more she saw, the more shocked she became.
There were contracts, nominee-shareholding agreements, equity transfer agreements, bid documents, the latest business investment proposals, and even electronic copies of extremely high-level meeting records.
Those records documented highly confidential discussions from the meetings.
Beyond that, there were product reports from other companies, some dating back several years and others extremely recent.
Every one of these files had one thing in common.
They were all connected to one person—
Ding Ruilong.
The contents were astonishing.
What made them astonishing was not the sheer variety or the number of files.
Most of them were “historical files,” materials relating to investments Ding Ruilong had made in the past.
That was not astonishing.
What was astonishing was that there were current files.
Some were even from yesterday.
Yesterday!
Wu Yurong was truly stunned.
If these files were genuine, then their value…
Knowing what Ding Ruilong intended to do next.
Knowing which company was about to receive his investment.
Knowing where he planned to draw funds from.
Knowing where he might pull out his money, or what company he wanted to acquire next.
And so on.
With that knowledge, there were countless ways to operate.
They could move ahead of Ding Ruilong to snatch investments from him, short positions, exploit price differences…
They could make a fortune while hurting Ding Ruilong badly.
Of course, the value of these files depended on whose hands they fell into.
If an ordinary business owner received them, they would not mean much.
That person simply would not dare act.
And even if they did, they would not have the power to operate on such a scale. They might expose themselves before accomplishing anything.
Wu Yurong, naturally, was no “ordinary” business owner.
She also knew the Ding family was going down.
Ding Ruilong was going down.
Her own background might not be strong enough, but she had already joined forces with Gu Ruibo.
So not only could she act, she could act on an enormous scale.
In the later stages, she could even go after the Ding family without fear and hit them as hard as possible.
In Wu Yurong’s hands, the value of these files could almost be called immeasurable.
Even the “historical files” were tremendously useful.
Far too much of it qualified as business secrets.
And Wu Yurong and Gu Ruibo were already preparing to hunt the Ding family’s assets.
Wu Yurong truly had never imagined the USB drive would contain something like this.
A moment ago, she had been thinking about some little gift.
Now…
How could this possibly be called a little gift?
This was an enormous surprise.
Wu Chen was…
Spoiling her.
Only now did Wu Yurong finally understand why Wu Chen had said it was a gift and yet not exactly a gift.
This was, in itself, serious business.
It was part of the operation against Ding Ruilong.
But Wu Chen had handed the files to her, Wu Yurong, and entrusted her to handle them…
So either way of looking at it was right.
Wu Yurong grew excited.
The feeling in her heart was difficult to put into words.
The more she thought about it, the more excited she became. Her face even flushed, and her breathing quickened considerably.
The impact was overwhelming.
Her head felt faintly light, almost dazed.
For a moment, she even felt that if Wu Chen treated her this way, then she could do anything for him.
Whatever he asked of her, she would do it.
She felt an impulse to throw herself into it without regard for the consequences.
Emotionally, she felt very much like a little woman.
As she thought, Wu Yurong abruptly stood.
She picked up her phone, intending to call Wu Chen.
She wanted to ask how he had obtained all this.
There were even files from yesterday.
More than that, she wanted to talk to him.
She wanted to see him and have a long, proper conversation…
But after pulling up Wu Chen’s number, Wu Yurong suddenly stopped.
She did not call.
Because she remembered what Wu Chen had told her before leaving.
Do not disturb him for two hours.
Now she understood why he had specifically warned her.
Wu Chen had calculated her reaction in advance.
Standing behind her desk with the phone in her hand, her face flushed, Wu Yurong thought for a long while.
Finally, she took two deep breaths, pursed her lips, and muttered softly, “Bastard.”
She wanted very badly to call Wu Chen, but he had told her not to.
That left her feeling almost uncomfortable, with nowhere for all that emotion to go.
She felt he had done it on purpose.
He was playing with her emotions.
…
Central District, Donghai.
Qingmu Third Street.
Shuiyuehe Teahouse.
It was an upscale but relatively small teahouse on a street corner. Its location was somewhat out of the way for the Central District. Business had remained mediocre in the several years since it opened, though it did not lose money.
The owner behind Shuiyuehe Teahouse kept an extremely low profile in Donghai.
He did not care whether the teahouse made money.
That owner was Lei Cheng.
3:28 p.m.
A black Audi A8 sped toward the teahouse and began slowing as it approached.
Inside the car.
Wu Chen rested a hand on the steering wheel and glanced sideways out the window.
Fewer than ten cars occupied the row of parking spaces in front of Shuiyuehe Teahouse.
Six of them were the vehicles used by Ding Ruilong and his people.
Ding Ruilong had already arrived.
He had probably already met Lei Cheng by now.
But before Wu Chen arrived, Lei Cheng would only exchange pleasantries and meaningless talk with him.
The important part would not begin until Wu Chen got there.
Wu Chen drove the Audi A8 around the corner and parked by the roadside on the other side of the street corner.
After getting out, he entered an alley and went into the teahouse through the rear entrance.
It was time to “meet” Ding Ruilong.
If Ding Ruilong said even one wrong thing today, then things would become…
Very interesting.
